What is the Opportunity?

Join our friendly team of arts enthusiasts as an Usher at Toronto’s most exquisite venue—the renowned Koerner Hall. Ushers will work an average of two to three shifts per week, sharing in our audience’s passion for music across a season of classical, jazz, world music, and pop concerts (plus readings, lectures, operas, and more). Conveniently located between St. George and Museum stations, The Royal Conservatory offers front-of-house staff a flexible schedule, a stunning work environment, and the opportunity to watch concerts by exceptional local and international artists. This is a great opportunity to gain work experience, earn supplementary income, and meet people who are passionate about the arts.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide exemplary patron service to all customers and clients using the services of the TELUS Centre.

  • Perform Front of House functions such as ticket scanning, patron seating, program distribution, and upkeep.

  • Direct and manage patron traffic to maintain safe and effective flow in all public areas.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve patron dissatisfaction in an efficient, professional, and kind manner.

  • Remain current and up-to-date with all Health and Safety Procedures, Emergency Preparedness, Fire Safety and issues of Accessibility.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of events and services available in and around the Centre to be able to expertly respond to patron and client inquiries.

  • Communicate and enforce house policies with respect to late calls, cameras/recording devices, etc.

  • Monitor quality of stage sound, auditorium temperature, the physical space (seats, floors, railings) and report deficiencies to supervisors.

  • Assisting and guiding guests with special needs and patrons with disabilities.

  • Coordinating with Security and providing assistance in case of emergency, as needed.

  • Ensure patrons’ overall comfort during the performance.

  • Other related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience working with others in a fast-paced and busy environment.
  • Experience and interest in the performing arts is considered a significant asset.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, coupled with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Customer service orientation and the ability to deal effectively with situations requiring. diplomacy, tact, friendliness, and firmness.
  • Attentiveness and ability to react quickly to any situation that may arise.
  • Ability to handle rowdy and disruptive patrons.
  • Professional, empathetic and patient.
  • Collaborative team player.

Hourly Rate

  • $17.45 per hour

Additional Information

  • Prolonged periods of standing.
  • Our event schedule changes week to week. Availability is required primarily during evenings and Sunday afternoons. Must be available to work 2-3 shifts per week.
