Compliance Specialist
Calgary, AB / Vancouver, BC / Toronto, ON / Ottawa, ON
Salary Range: $55,000 - $65,000/year
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Compliance Specialist to join our Compliance team. This is a critical role that contributes directly to safeguarding the organization from financial crime risks by conducting thorough investigations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining strong internal controls. The ideal candidate will bring a proactive approach to AML compliance, possess excellent investigative skills, and demonstrate sound knowledge of Canadian AML regulations.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Investigate and assess transaction monitoring alerts for potential money laundering (ML), terrorist financing (TF), and other financial crime risks.
- Conduct enhanced due diligence (EDD) using open-source research, negative media screening, and name screening tools.
- Identify suspicious activity, red flags, and risk indicators (e.g., unusual transaction patterns or structuring) that may require escalation.
- Prepare well-documented case narratives and recommendations for escalation to relevant stakeholders.
- Support the compliance team by acting as an independent review and evaluation body, ensuring compliance issues are thoroughly investigated and resolved.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, legal, and risk management to strengthen AML processes and controls.
- Stay current with changes to AML legislation, FINTRAC guidance, and industry best practices.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in AML investigations, compliance, or a related field.
- Familiarity with Canadian AML laws and regulations, including the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (PCMLTFA) and FINTRAC guidance.
- Strong analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and make sound decisions.
- Exceptional written communication skills with attention to detail in documenting findings and case notes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a high-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:

ACAMS Transaction Monitoring Foundations Certification or other relevant AML certifications (e.g., CFCS, ICA).

Experience with transaction monitoring tools, case management systems, or AML software platforms.

Exposure to financial institutions, fintech, or regulated entities.
