As we expand, we are looking for a dependable Senior Staff Accountant to join our team and help us deliver exceptional service.
Position Summary
As a Senior Staff Accountant, you will take a lead role in preparing and reviewing personal and corporate tax returns, financial statements, and other compliance filings. You will work directly with the principal accountants and supervise junior staff as needed. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys working with owner-managed businesses and appreciates the variety of a boutique practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review Notice to Reader (Compilation) financial statements
- Prepare and file personal and corporate income tax returns (T1, T2), GST/HST returns, T4s, T5s, and other CRA filings
- Perform tax research and assist with tax planning for clients
- Review work prepared by junior accountants and provide constructive feedback
- Liaise directly with clients to request information, answer questions, and resolve issues
- Ensure compliance with current tax legislation and firm policies
- Maintain organized working papers and electronic files
- Contribute to process improvements and assist with training new staff as the firm grows
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred
- 3–5 years of relevant Canadian public practice experience, preferably in a small or mid-sized firm
Technical Skills:
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP, Canadian personal and corporate tax rules
- Strong knowledge of year-end adjusting entries (accruals, deferrals, provisions)
- Proficiency in preparing working paper files for external review or CRA audit
- Solid understanding of reconciliations — bank, accounts receivable/payable, and intercompany balances
- Ability to prepare journal entries and maintain general ledger accuracy
- Competence in identifying exceptions
- Experience with CRA online services (Represent a Client, My Business Account, e-file)
- Understanding of payroll tax remittances, T4 preparation, WSIB premium calculation and ESA
- Familiarity with CRA audit correspondence and responding to CRA queries
- Working knowledge of bookkeeping software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage)
- Competence with Excel functions (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, data validation)
Soft/Professional Skills:
- Strong time management and ability to prioritize multiple files
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and client files with minimal supervision
- Analytical thinking to identify discrepancies and propose corrections
- Clear, professional client communication, both written and spoken in English, Cantonese and Mandarin
- High level of attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- A positive, respectful, and client-focused attitude
- Willingness to train and mentor junior team members
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with tax changes
Nice to Have
- Experience with more advanced tax scenarios (e.g., T1135, ABIL, part-year returns, CDA, LCGE )
- Familiarity with practice management and workflow tools
- Desire to grow with the firm and take on increased responsibility over time
