Hybrid Work: This is a hybrid work position in Calgary, Alberta and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility the remaining 40% of the work week. This hybrid work plan allows for critically important learning, collaboration and networking with our colleagues. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.

The successful candidate will join our dynamic Tax & Treasury group, as a key support role for various tax processes and functions. Reporting to the Manager - Tax, the successful candidate will be an integral part of the tax team and responsible for indirect tax compliance and analysis with a view to minimizing tax liabilities and ensuring that tax affairs are conducted in accordance with tax laws and regulations of the respective jurisdictions in which we operate.

Responsibilities:

  • Involved in the preparation of monthly International VAT (Value Added Tax) and other sales tax returns, compliance, remittances, and instalments, domestically and internationally.
  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly and annually airline tax returns. Including any research in relation to such taxes.
  • Assist in ensuring that the systems WestJet uses to determine the above noted tax liabilities are configured and working as required.
  • Issue identification with all the above responsibilities with a view to improve processes and/or identify potential tax savings, including developing efficiencies and automation wherever possible to help with the increasing complexities with IT systems and tax compliance requirements.
  • Understanding and analyzing transactions including assisting with technical research and analysis, while maintaining a focus on developing relevant technical skills.
  • Prepare tax analysis for internal and external use.
  • Maintain accurate departmental accounting including completing applicable journal entries and account reconciliations on a timely basis.
  • Play a key role in audits by various taxing authorities, including responding to notices and inquiries.
  • Assisting with various tax recovery projects..

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA) additional to a post-secondary diploma or degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • A minimum 5 years’ experience in an accounting or tax role.
  • Previous work experience in tax compliance would be an asset.
  • Ability to analyze and solve a range of problems, generally by developing a sound understanding of the problem, coming up with possible solutions and recommendations, and seeking guidance and assistance from management when appropriate.
  • Advanced skill level with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel.
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Contributes actively in team activities, sharing expertise and ideas.
  • An enthusiastic self-starter that takes initiative when presented with tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the team and with other departments.
  • A great attitude and a proven ability to have fun.
  • Having a second language would be a great asset to this role.
