POSITION: Animal Transfer Driver

STATUS: Permanent; Part-time

SHIFT: up to 20 hours per week - Various Shifts

LOCATION: Nanaimo, BC

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

WAGE: Hourly

About the Position:
The Animal Transfer Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of animals to BC SPCA locations from external sources as well as between BC SPCA locations following the BC SPCA Animal Transfer Protocols. Maintains and oversees the care of the transfer vehicle and ensures optimal welfare for all animals travelling within their care based on the Five Freedoms and outlined in the Animal Transfer Protocols.

Some specific duties:

  • Establishes strong working relationships with manager, animal transfer program, branch managers, shelter staff and volunteers, and collaborates effectively as required to ensure all duties outlined below are completed.
  • Collects all paperwork required from pick-up points and delivers to respective location or driver.
  • Ensures excellent welfare of animals travelling within the vehicle at all times by:
  • Loading animals destined for branch into transfer vehicle using low stress handling;
  • Ensuring transfer vehicle is loaded with appropriate-sized animal crates;
  • Reporting any animal welfare or animal transport issues to manager, animal transfer program by email with attached pictures as needed;
  • Following the BC SPCA Animal Transfer Protocols.
  • Assists with unloading of animals at final destination or to the next driver.
  • Pick up at numerous locations in a timely manner and be able to work a shift of up to 12 hours’ in length, with appropriate breaks, in a single day.
  • Cleans kennels and vehicle after transfers completed.
  • Maintains the transfer vehicle(s) as per Transport Action standards.
  • Reports any vehicle issues to manager, animal transfer program immediately upon identification.
  • Represents the Society in a respectful manner at all times when interacting with staff, volunteers, external contacts, as well as members of the public; answers questions as required and makes referrals where unable to answer a question directly.
  • Trains on call or relief drivers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you need to have:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License and a strong understanding of BC driving rules and laws
  • Clean driving record – Driver’s Abstract to be submitted as a condition of employment
  • Comfortable driving in various weather conditions safely and with ease
  • Ability to work both independently as well as a member of a team
  • Ability to lift minimum 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work daily shifts of up to 12 hours’ in length
  • Availability to drive a variety of hours as required by the program, including late night/early morning
  • Animal handling experience an asset
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission and strategic directions of the BC SPCA
