Reporting to the Deputy Minister/Secretary to Cabinet. The Assistant Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs (ADM) assists the Deputy Minister (DM) in providing sound advice and support to the Minister responsible for the department; for the development and evaluation of guidelines, policy and legislation; for co-ordination of intergovernmental and interdepartmental co-operation; for public relations regarding corporate matters; for providing specialized support and advice; for liaising with national/ international, provincial, and territorial governments and organizations; for participating in departmental strategic planning; for co-coordinating departmental involvement with other Government of Nunavut departments in the development of interdepartmental initiatives; and for assessing and evaluating impacts to Nunavut of national, provincial, territorial governments and trans-boundary group initiatives.
The ADM is responsible for Intergovernmental Relations for the Government of Nunavut, Immigration, Sustainable Resource Development, and Indigenous and Circumpolar Affairs and accountable to the Deputy Minister for the coordinated, effective, and efficient provision to the government, government employees and the population of Nunavut, of services and programs relating to the departments mandate. In the absence of the Deputy Minister, the ADM may assume the duties of this position.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized undergraduate degree in business, commerce, political science or a related field, plus five (5) years of senior management experience in a related field, preferably in a government setting. A current passport is required. A master’s degree in a related field is an asset. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
