This composite position of clinical educator and registered nurse is a dual role position that is split evenly between clinical education (50%) and direct clinical practice within the surgical program (50%). The educator component supports staff development across the OR, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Endoscopy and Day Surgery, while the clinical component ensures continued hands-on expertise and patient care delivery within surgical services in alignment with the standards of practice set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the standards and competencies set out by the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC). The Educator will be the super user/mentor in the Cerner Electronic Health Record application and will work with the program’s leadership team to develop standards of work, policies, procedures, and provide the ongoing education around these workflows.
EDUCATION:
-
BSCN in nursing required, master’s degree in nursing or healthcare related field preferred

Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
-
Perioperative Nursing Certification is preferred.
-
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education within the past two (2) years related to surgical services.
EXPERIENCE:
-
Mandatory minimum 5 years’ recent experience in surgical services with preference given to Operating room and/or PACU experience.
-
3 years’ experience in leadership role or education role preferred.
Clinical Practice:
-
Provide direct patient care, maintaining clinical competency and supporting team workflow.
-
Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure safe, efficient, and people-centered care.
-
Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to staff, supporting best practices and clinical decision-making.
-
Participate in on-call rotation and assist with staffing coverage as needed.
-
Attends and actively participates in all unit huddles and staff meetings
-
Assume the role of laser safety officer and obtain the required certifications.
Education and Staff Development:
-
Assess learning needs and develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for staff in the OR, PACU, Endoscopy and Day Surgery.

Facilitate orientation and boarding of new staff, including preceptorship and competency assessments.
-
Deliver in-services, workshops, and simulation-based training to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
-
Collaborate with leadership and clinical teams to identify learning needs and develop targeted education initiatives.
-
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices, policies, and procedures, and ensure staff compliance.
-
Support quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice integration.
-
Act as a resource for clinical questions, troubleshooting, and professional development.
-
Attends and actively participates in all unit huddles and staff meetings, including leading unit huddles and chairing committees
Quality Improvement & Evidence-Based Practice:
-
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits of staff documentation practices to enhance practice compliance, patient outcomes and safety.

Promote and integrate evidence-based practices into clinical workflows.
-
Collaborate with leadership to identify educational gaps and implement strategies to address them.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
-
Work closely with physicians, anesthesia providers, and allied health professionals to support interdisciplinary education and care coordination.

Act as a liaison between clinical staff and leadership to ensure alignment of educational priorities with organizational goals.
SKILLS:

Critical thinking and organizational skills

Computer skills including competency with Microsoft Office software and Cerner EHR.

Demonstrated clinical competency in the management of care of patients in surgery.

Knowledge and the ability to apply the principles of adult learning.
