OVERVIEW:

We are seeking an experienced Group Underwriter to join our team at the intermediate or senior level. In this role, you will be responsible for complex risk assessments, pricing strategies, and portfolio management for both new and in-force group benefits business. You’ll collaborate closely with sales and actuarial teams, applying your deep industry knowledge to drive sound underwriting decisions and support business growth.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Lead the underwriting of renewals and quotations for health, dental, life, and disability benefits, with a focus on mid-to-large group cases.
  • Apply advanced risk assessment techniques to evaluate plan design changes and ensure alignment with underwriting principles and profitability targets.
  • Review and validate new business enrollments, ensuring consistency with quoted terms and underwriting assumptions.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation to support underwriting decisions and ensure compliance with audit standards.
  • Analyze claims experience, demographic trends, and financial performance to inform pricing and renewal strategies.
  • Collaborate with sales, actuarial, and product teams to develop tailored benefit solutions for complex client needs.
  • Mentor junior underwriters and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives that enhance underwriting processes and tools.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of direct experience in group underwriting, with demonstrated expertise in assessing and pricing group benefits plans.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, business, economics, or a related field. CEBS, GBA, or other underwriting-related certifications are strong assets.
  • Advanced analytical and decision-making skills with a strong grasp of underwriting methodologies and financial principles.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex underwriting decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other analytical tools; experience with underwriting systems is an asset.
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid environment.
  • In-depth understanding of group benefits products; familiarity with Alberta Blue Cross® offerings is a plus.
