Position Summary
Reporting to the Program Manager, Traffic Safety and Operations, the Traffic Intern will provide program-related assistance to the Infrastructure Planning and Development Engineering Division. The Traffic Intern will assist in providing technical support on various matters related to traffic engineering and transportation planning.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Shadow multiple City positions and train in a variety of tasks.
- Answer phone inquiries, direct calls, and provide basic information; oversee mail deliveries, packages, and couriers.
- Perform clerical duties, take memos, maintain files, organize documents; photocopy, fax, etc., as needed.
- Assist in preparing information and research materials; create and maintain PowerPoint presentations.
- Take notes and memos during meetings; type documents, drafts, and reports; sort and manage files.
- Manage databases and input information, data, and records.
- Research and gather documentation related to the divisional function.
- Assist in gathering field data (e.g., traffic counts, sign inventories) for traffic-related inquiries using computerized equipment and automatic traffic recorders.
- Conduct site inspections and reviews.
- Assist in analyzing traffic-related matters (e.g., all-way stop warrants, turning movement counts, speed studies, gap studies, traffic calming reviews).
- Assist in transportation studies and development of transportation initiatives/programs.
- Maintain the City's traffic data management system (TES) for traffic recorders, turning movement counts, and historical collision records.
- Review and prepare collision summary reports.
- Attend public sessions as required.
- Assist with transportation planning and development activities.
- Assist with the electric vehicle charging and micromobility strategies
Education and Experience
Recent graduate (within one year), or currently enrolled in college or university program in Transportation Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology or a related program.
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Enthusiastic and creative team player.
- Possess CSA-certified 8” steel toe safety boots for fieldwork.
- Knowledge of spreadsheet and database computer programs/applications, including GIS software.
- Experience in a municipal government setting is considered an asset.
- Possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license.
- Provide own transportation for field monitoring activities (mileage compensated).
- Proof of vehicle insurance is required.
- Flexibility in work hours is required.
