The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) with experience in long-term care to join the Licensing Unit, Continuing Care Branch. The Licensing Unit is responsible for regulating personal care homes in Saskatchewan under The Personal Care Homes Act.

In this exciting position, you will provide nursing leadership and support to the team, conduct inspections and investigations, develop policy, and perform other assigned duties.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan or the Saskatchewan Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association.
  • Have at least one year of experience working in a long-term care setting.
  • Have knowledge of medical conditions, treatments and issues affecting older adults in care.

Knowledge and experience in policy and planning would be an asset.

Provincial travel is required to manage a case load, provide support and attend meetings. A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence is required for this position.

You will have the demonstrated ability to:

  • Utilize nursing expertise and clinical knowledge to assess a resident’s condition, review care records and inquire of other health care professionals to determine if care needs are met and enforcement action is needed.
  • Communicate clearly, accurately, concisely and sensitively both verbally and in writing, in order to prepare reports/correspondence, conduct interviews, deal with sensitive situations, and explain medical information/situations/clinical data in a clear, accurate and understandable manner at a level appropriate to the audience.
  • Accurately interpret and apply applicable legislation, policies and procedures, and review and amend legislation, regulations and standards as they apply to personal care homes.
  • Identify, review, investigate and record relevant information and/or evidence through observation, interviews, inquiries and inspections;
  • Search for and assess information in order to develop legislation, materials, plans and reports, analyze trends and issues, identify and develop options and solutions and make timely policy recommendations/conclusions on a variety of quality and operational issues in order to meet Ministry goals and client needs.
  • Consult/work with other organizations, colleagues, individuals and communities to develop and maintain positive working relationships, policies and protocols, address complaints, ensure compliance with policies/programs/legislation, establish partnerships and obtain and exchange information and resources.
  • Work both independently and as a team member with other individuals and organizations to meet client and program needs;
  • Plan, organize and prioritize a high-volume, diverse workload, taking into consideration conflicting priorities, frequent interruptions and the needs of the team.
  • Interact diplomatically to determine or mediate a solution when encountering difficult or confrontational situations.
