Library Technician
Number of positions: 1 Job Location: Edmonds Annex - W3
Employment type: Permanent Region: Lower Mainland
Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid
Annual salary: $ 52,700.00 - 57,800.00
Position Highlights
Provides library users with circulation, inter-library loan, document delivery, serials, bibliographic instruction and reference
services for a wide variety of information requests. Provides administrative and routine technical support in the acquisition
and cataloguing of library materials and in the overall development and maintenance of the corporate library collection.
What you'll do
- Responds to library inquiries and provides direction, advice, and instruction to library users on accessing and using
information resources using the library catalogue and other applications such as subscription databases. Explains library
services such as reference services, acquisitions, inter-library loan and document delivery, serials and cataloguing to
patrons as required.
- Provides circulation services using the automated library circulation module to sign out, track, recall, renew, and issue
overdue notices for library items. Identifies missing items and updates related records, mends library items, and shelves
materials. Assists in maintaining the physical library space. Recommends resource additions to the library collection based
on circulation trends and library user feedback.
- Performs a variety of acquisition duties related to the purchase of library materials including: selecting acquisition sources;
ordering and receiving items from suppliers; checking and reconciling purchase orders; processing payments; and
preparing purchase requisitions for approval. Documents, tracks, reconciles, and reports financial transactions and account
status of purchased materials. Monitors costs through supply chain systems.
- Provides original and derived descriptive cataloguing services for all material types using prescribed cataloguing practices
and standards by classifying materials and creating Machine-Readable Cataloguing (MARC) records. Conducts searches
for verification of subject headings and authority records. Adds, edits, and deletes bibliographic records. Assists in
identifying library print materials to be weeded from the collection and initiates annual periodical weeding project Updates
catalogue records in integrated library system to reflect material removed from collection.
- Maintains print and electronic serials collection by receiving, checking in and routing periodicals, as well as analyzing and
resolving issues such as missing periodicals.
- Fulfills requests for inter-library loans and document delivery requests. Searches Canadian and international academic
collections, the internet, commercial databases, and publisher sites, and submits requests and payment to complete.
- Participates in outreach activities such as: assisting with book cart displays; participating in and providing input into library
tours, presentations, and events; and promoting the use of library services and tools by building relationships with current
and potential library users.
- As a member of the Library team, provides input into the enhancement and development of library procedures, tools and
templates to streamline processes, incorporate new library standards and practices, and contribute to the effective
operation of the library. Updates library procedural documents as required.
- Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.
What you bring
- Post-secondary Diploma in Library and Information Technology AND two (2) years practical experience working in a
library setting.
- Experience working in a special library or archives and/or completion of archival courses considered an asset.
