Bridge housing is a service that supports an intensive shorter-term accommodation, that fills the gap between staying in a shelter or staying outdoors. When the individual can secure safe and appropriate housing connections are made to address the specific service and support needs of the individual.

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Supervisor, Homelessness Services, the Shelter Custodian maintains the building and grounds surrounding the Shelter location through janitorial and housekeeping. Responsible for the cleaning duties to ensure the Shelter remains clean, and sanitized. The Shelter Custodian also supports staff with meal preparation, serving, and washing of dishes, equipment, and food preparation areas.

The Shelter operates 24/7/365, providing temporary shelter to individuals who are experiencing homelessness, including those that may be living with severe and chronic mental illnesses, addiction issues, and/or in recovery. Custodians work as part of a team that supports clients from a trauma-informed approach, ensuring hospitality, dignity, and respect during their stay at the Shelter Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid
  • Current Safe Food Handling Certificate
  • Must complete WHMIS and Biohazard Spill Response training; previous training/certification is preferred
  • Naloxone certification, Trauma-Informed approaches, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training are assets

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 1-3 months experience in commercial cleaning, janitorial or housekeeping in a shelter, congregate care, institutional environment, or similar setting
  • Experience working with homeless or other vulnerable populations is an asset
  • Knowledge of client-centred, trauma-informed approaches, harm-reduction practices, and Housing First principles are assets
  • Knowledge of client safety issues and ability to apply client safety practices

SKILLS

  • Must possess working knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment and tools
  • Good computer skills to complete computerized work orders, word processing, and email (Microsoft Office)
  • Must be able to work without direct supervision
  • Excellent verbal & written communication and customer service skills, and strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients
  • Well organized and good time management skills and acceptable pace to meet schedules
  • High standards of cleanliness, quality, and organization of supplies and equipment

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Records Check
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is an asset
  • Naloxone certification and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training within 3 months of hire is required
