The Werklund School of Education is currently seeking a Full-time Regular International Facilitator.

The Werklund School of Education is currently seeking a regular, full time International Facilitator, Academic Support Office position that is part of the AUPE bargaining unit. This role has a high impact on the success of the strategic priorities of the Office and the Werklund School. Qualified applicants with diverse lived experiences are encouraged to apply.

The Academic Support Office supports this vision through the integrated offices of Research, Teaching and Learning, International, Indigenous Education and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. This dynamic collaborative team includes three associate deans, three academic directors, a manager, and three to four support staff.

The International Facilitator will report to the Manager, Academic Support Office, and work under the direction of the Associate Dean - International. The role includes providing strategic advice and lead work in relation to international initiatives and funding opportunities, collaboration, communications, and outreach activities. To achieve this goal the incumbent works independently but refers to supervisor when work departs from established policy and procedure guidelines. This position works from generally defined goals of the University and specifically designed goals established by the Werklund School of Education. The International Facilitator works with limited direction and sets priorities and deadlines for themselves and others, ensuring all deadlines are met or negotiated as required. The position involves constant multi-tasking and weighing of situations with full understanding of the impact of decisions. Stressors can be high and the position requires high-level discretionary decision-making as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects to meet deadlines and deal with regular interruptions on a daily basis. The incumbent must demonstrate strong communication skills and be comfortable dealing with diverse constituents including students, academic and support staff, senior administration and representatives from government, the local and international education community, and members of various units across campus. The incumbent must be proactive in the collection and distribution of information and must exercise extreme discretion and good judgment in dealing with complex issues, initiating, and implementing resolutions to ensure continuity and integrity of service. Work requires the management of competing interests, priorities, and deadlines and involves a high level of organization, creativity, continuous change, and shifting priorities. The need for accuracy in collecting and analyzing data is significant.

This position is a part of the AUPE bargaining unit. This regular full time position reports to the Manager, Academic Support Office. This is a regular, full-time position, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Early morning, evening and weekend hours may be required on occasion to meet critical deadlines. The ability to attend functions and meetings before and after working hours is necessary once or twice a year.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

International Partnership Development and Communication

  • Promotes and provides resources, supports, and services within and across the Werklund School of Education in support of international partnership development.
  • Collaborates with the Dean, Associate Deans, to build internal capacity in support of international partnerships, coordinates development of strategic internationalization initiatives within the Werklund School of Education.
  • Leading initiatives that encourage academic staff to contribute to the internationalization goals of the Werklund School of Education.
  • Explores and tracks international funding opportunities.
  • Collaborates with academic staff in developing and strengthening their internationalization intentions and agendas; with the Associate Dean - International, initiates and supports international collaborations on campus.
  • Liaises with the Communications team to communicate and promote international opportunities, ongoing initiatives, and academic staff and student international experiences.

Proposals, Grants, and Agreements

  • Maintains a close working relationship with the U of C International Office in order to facilitate international processes and to ensure compliance with both University and sponsor requirements.
  • Seeks and establishes personal relationships with internal and external agencies and U of C International service personnel on behalf of the Werklund School of Education.
  • Advises academic staff on the philosophy, funding priorities, eligibility criteria and budget requirements of internal and major Canadian, U.S., and international funding agencies and foundations.
  • Provides expert advice and information to academic staff and senior Werklund School leadership regarding proposal development, grant applications, and award processes.
  • Supports the Associate Dean International with the facilitation of processes and the articulation of international agreements between the Werklund School of Education, U of C International, government, and private sector offices.
  • Develops timelines and processes for reviewing proposals/grant applications prior to the provision of institutional signatures.
  • Develops and manages an academic staff pre-review process for major international proposals/grant applications.

Strategic Planning and Reporting

  • Supports the Associate Dean - International in the enactment of a long-range strategic plan for supporting capacity building, international goal attainment, and academic staff proposal and grant application preparation and submission.
  • Researches and priorities of new international grant funding opportunities from the University of Calgary, government, private foundations, and industry relevant for academic staff members of the school.
  • Provides advice for the proposal and grant writing infrastructure support needs of academic staff who are pursuing international opportunities and based on these needs, provides recommendations to the Associate Dean - International on the ongoing requirements and possible avenues of support for international initiatives.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean - International and International Advisory Committee (IAC), collaborates on continuous improvement of processes, policies, procedures, and practices that guide international initiatives and student experiences.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Academic Support Office, designs and maintains a reporting procedure for all international grants and awards.
  • Collaborates with the International Advisory Committee (IAC) and the Associate Dean International to design internal funding opportunities for academic staff that align with the University priorities and funder needs.

Education, Programs, and Research

  • In consultation with the Associate Dean - International, prepares program proposals and implements them in consideration of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) recommendations.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean - International and Associate Dean - Research, identifies internationalization opportunities in support of undergraduate and graduate student mobility and academic staff research.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean - International and Associate Dean - Research to identify strategies for showcasing and promoting Werklund School of Education international research initiatives.

Accountability Support

  • Remains current on factors that would initiate change, such as University policies and procedures, granting agency regulations, practices and technology changes pertaining to international projects and protocols.
  • Reviews applications to ensure that all University and sponsor requirements have been met resulting in recommendations for signature to the Associate Dean - International.
  • Under the direction of the Associate Dean, consults with Legal Counsel as required.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate level degree in Education (or related field) is required, including either a Master's degree, a Doctoral degree or a doctoral degree that is All but Dissertation (ABD); 4 to 6 years of international partnership development or international program administration is recommended. A graduate certificate with several years of international experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, work autonomously, act decisively, and exercise a high degree of initiative, diplomacy, and judgment on a wide range of issues, using discretion and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills to deal effectively with complex decisions, issues, and initiatives are required.
  • Proven ability to communicate with academic and support staff and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • High proficiency in writing and editing with strong attention to structure, style, and detail is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and funding agency officers.
  • Proven networking and public relations skills required.
  • A highly developed understanding of mandates, structures, review processes, funding priorities, budget requirements, and policies and procedures of internal and major Canadian government and international private funding agencies and foundations.
  • The ability to use independent judgment, to take initiative, to work independently and to organize and complete work with minimal supervision is necessary.
  • Familiarity with international education contexts (K-12 and/or post-secondary) would be regarded as an asset.
  • Strong experience in writing international funding proposals and working with international partners and/or in international settings.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to use discretion with confidential material, a high level of tact and professionalism and a strong work ethic are required.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion is an asset. Experience with mandates related to Indigenous peoples and/or equity, diversity, and inclusion work is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications are required. Experience with business data analysis tools (e.g., PowerBI), Research Management System (RMS), university business systems (such as PeopleSoft) and/or project management software is an asset
