As a key member of the supply chain leadership team, the Purchasing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the purchasing team to ensure that goods and services are procured effectively and in alignment with company objectives. This position plays a critical role in vendor performance management, team coaching and development, and cross-functional collaboration with logistics, planning, and operations teams. The Purchasing Supervisor ensures cost-effective purchasing, adherence to lead times, inventory optimization, and continuous improvement within the purchasing process.
Requirements
**What is the day in the life of a Purchasing Supervisor:**
- Supervise and support the purchasing team in executing procurement activities aligned with cost, quality, and delivery targets.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management to team members, fostering continuous improvement and accountability.
- Manage a portfolio of key or strategic suppliers, including negotiating terms, purchasing stock codes, and ensuring delivery and service expectations are met.
- Oversee the issuance, accuracy, and follow-up of purchase orders within the team.
- Ensure purchasing standard operating procedures and policies are followed consistently and in alignment with business requirements.
- Monitor and manage purchasing KPIs (e.g., cost savings, on-time delivery, inventory turns) and report on team and vendor performance.
- Partner with planning and logistics to ensure inventory levels are balanced with service requirements and cost targets. Resolve escalated vendor issues, lead vendor performance reviews and coordinate with stakeholders to mitigate risk and secure supply.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance procurement efficiency and reduce cost or risk.
- Approve purchase orders within delegated authority and ensure accuracy and alignment with business needs.
- Maintain accurate ERP data for own and team-managed vendors, including lead times, pricing, and contact details.
- Develop and present reports and recommendations to the Director of Supply Chain on purchasing strategy, vendor health, and team performance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to align purchasing activities with organizational priorities and resolve escalations as needed.
- Act as a liaison between the purchasing team and internal stakeholders to resolve escalations and support business needs.
What we are looking for in a successful candidate:
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in purchasing or procurement, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
- Professional certification (e.g., APICS, CPIM, CPSM) considered an asset.
- Proven leadership and coaching skills with the ability to develop and motivate a team.
- Strong understanding of purchasing practices, vendor negotiation, and ERP systems (Syspro preferred).
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
