See the Position Summary section for more detail on these two roles.

Who we are

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is a comprehensive, learner-centred and sustainable university offering high-quality and flexible education, training, research and scholarship to regional, national and international learners and their communities. TRU offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs in the fields of Nursing, Social Work, Education, Computer Science, Science and Law to a highly diverse student population. Located on the traditional territory of the Secwepemc peoples, TRU offers two campuses in Kamloops and Williams Lake and several regional centres in British Columbia’s southern interior.

In line with our vision, “Community-minded with a global conscience, we boldly redefine the university as a place of belonging — Kw’seltktnéws (we are all related and interconnected with nature, each other, and all things) — where all people are empowered to transform themselves, their communities, and the world,” Thompson Rivers University is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Why Kamloops?

These positions are based out of TRU’s main campus in Kamloops, which features an abundance of green space and overlooks the North and South Thompson Rivers. Kamloops is a vibrant city that offers a high quality of life for people of all ages, with mild winters, warm summers, and short commutes. Kamloops boasts an events centre, excellent primary and community health care, an airport, schools, the university, and a WHL hockey team.

The city is situated between the Coastal and Rocky Mountains, which is the perfect backdrop for some of Canada’s most incredible outdoor experiences. Living and working in Kamloops, you will be minutes away from scenic river trails and parks and a short distance to world-class outdoor recreation in all seasons, including mountain biking and hiking trails, freshwater lakes in the Okanagan and Shuswap and world-class skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Plus, it is only a few hours' drive to major hubs in BC, Alberta, and the United States.

Position Summary

The Accountant, Financial Planning and Budget, and Financial Planning Consultant roles play a pivotal role in managing the university's financial planning and budgeting as well as in helping senior leaders make informed decisions in the effective allocation of resources. As a member of the Finance team and reporting to the Manager, Financial Planning and Budget, the roles collaborate cross-functionally to provide financial services, budget planning and other related processes in support of academic and administrative leaders. The roles act as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of departments and provide comprehensive strategic and operational advice, guidance, and support in all facets of strategic resource planning in alignment with the university's mission, vision and values. The roles also work closely with the Financial Reporting team to provide advice to budget holders that correctly applies generally accepted accounting principles. In addition, their financial reports, forecasts, analytical reports, budgets, and variances will be essential in monitoring fund expenditures and financial reporting.

The difference between the two roles is that the Accountant role is an entry-level professional role that is suited for a qualified candidate with a lower level of experience. The Financial Planning Consultant is a mid-level professional role that is suited for a qualified candidate with more extensive and direct experience.
