About the role
This position is located in Hay River, NT (this is NOT a rotational or remote position -- it does require the successful candidate to reside in Hay River, NT) Under the direction of the Manager, Engineering Design, this position provides Civil design, inspection, and project management services, from the conceptual stage through to commissioning, for capital projects and maintenance support activities involving the Corporation’s generating stations and transmission and distribution systems. The incumbent provides Civil technical support for the Corporation’s infrastructure.
- Prepares and/or reviews contractor/consultant preliminary and final detailed designs for Civil works associated with the Corporation's generating stations and transmission and distribution substations.
- Conducts plant assessment and feasibility studies, using present value and life cycle analysis, for the upgrade or rehabilitation of existing facilities and for the construction of new facilities
- Provides technical support services to the Hydro Region for Civil-related work such as dam safety, dam inspections and water management. Participates with the Hydro Team to review and evaluate reservoir operation. Participates with the Hydro Team to conduct regular inspections to ensure the integrity and safety of all Hydro Infrastructure including dams, spillways, penstock, culverts, stop log and gate structures, etc.
- Prepares RFPs, including the detailed scope of work, for services that are to be provided by engineering consultants and specialists for Civil/structural design and construction.
- Prepares technical specifications, tender documents, drawings, and cost estimates for projects that are designed "in-house". Provides in-house quality assurance by checking and marking-up design drawings and by reviewing design calculations.
- Performs on-site construction supervision, prepares detailed, project-specific Civil commissioning procedures, and carries out or witnesses, as appropriate, the commissioning of Civil works.
- Delivers capital projects to the maximum satisfaction of the end-user (generally the Regions), allowing for constraints established by corporate objectives, sound engineering practice and safety.
- Other duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of two years of related experience.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada and eligible to register as a P.Eng. with NAPEG in the NWT.
- Registration as a member with Canadian Dam Association is an asset.
- Experience in Hydro Generation, Dam Safety, Hydrology and Water Management is an asset.
- Accomplished computer skills and ability to apply Civil design software.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
- Class 5 driver's license.
- Satisfactory criminal record check.
This is a bargaining unit position. Salary for this position ranges from $66.22/hr to $80.48/hr, plus location allowance of approximately $3,823 per annum and a comprehensive benefits package, which includes Health and Dental Benefits, Life Insurance, paid Sick Days and a Defined Pension Plan. Relocation assistance may be provided. Please note this is NOT a remote or rotational position -- it does require the successful candidate to relocate to/live in Hay River, NT, and must be willing & able to travel throughout the regions. The Corporation’s systems serve a population of approximately 43,000 in an area of 1.3 million square kilometers. Many of the communities NTPC serves are only accessible by air, barge or winter road.
