Job Synopsis

The MCCS Thrift Shops provide quality used clothing, furniture, and appliances at reasonable prices to a growing market. They generate a significant amount of funds for MCC’s relief and development projects. The Shop Assistant will work together with other Thrift Shop staff, volunteers, and Management in the overall operation of the Thrift Shop. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God’s creation and raising funds for MCC are key components to the mission statement of the Thrift Shops. The Village Green MCC Thrift shop is one of Saskatchewan’s seven MCC Thrift Shops.

Assignment Description
The Shop Assistant is accountable to the Village Green Retail Coordinator who will provide direction for the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of the Shop Assistant. This is a salaried full-time (40 hrs/week) position with the final work schedule being determined by the General Manager. Working on some Saturdays will be required.

This position will work approximately half of the time on the Retail Floor, serving and assisting customers and sales and the approximately half of the time in the Production space, sorting, pricing and preparing donations for the retail floor.

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of their supervisor.

  • Demonstrated cashier and sales skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • Requires about 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
  • Written and verbal communication skills within today’s technologies.
  • Solid organizational expertise.
  • Ability to reflect the Anabaptist value of service.
  • Ability to manage conflict creatively and redemptively.
  • A heart for justice from a Biblical perspective, global understanding, and awareness of environmental concerns.
  • Satisfactory Canadian criminal record check.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ’s unconditional love through daily interactions with volunteers, donors, and customers.

  • Follow the MCCS Thrift Shop Mission Statement, and direction of their supervisor, under the guidance of the Shop General Manager.

  • Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of the Thrift Shop in a positive manner to donors, volunteers, and customers.

  • Assist in the daily operation of the shop including sort, tag, price and put out donations; answer the phone; in-store public relations; help to keep the Shop neat, clean, and attractive; assist and support daily volunteers.

  • Operate the cash register, ensuring accuracy in processing transactions, per shop policies and procedures.

  • Exercise a compassionate spirit with volunteers, donors and customers on issues which arise as people interact within the store. Model reconciliation and healing in daily actions with public, donors and volunteers.

  • Assist with merchandise placement, displays, etc.

  • Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace, community, and church.

  • Carry out other duties which arise in the work environment, under the Management direction.

Note: Physical labor is involved in this position, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently, repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
