Salary Range**:** $5,295 - $6,885 Monthly

Grade**:** Order-in-Council

The North Battleford Regional Public Prosecutions location requires a Crown Counsel Assistant. This individual will understand the role of Public Prosecutions within the criminal justice system and Prosecutions’ practices. That includes full facility with Prosecutions’ file and case management systems and communication protocols for dealing with Justice partners.

The successful candidate will be well-organized, self-motivated, and efficient. You will work well independently, but first and foremost as part of the Prosecutions team. You will also work well under pressure, as many of the tasks assigned will be highly time-sensitive. Equally, the role requires self-setting of deadlines, monitoring of those deadlines, and self-initiated follow-up. Additionally, you will be one who is keen to follow and maintain standard practices, including file organization, while being able to draw on personal initiative and flexibility when change is required.

You will work under the supervision of a Senior Crown Prosecutor and will be expected to communicate in a concise, professional manner with Prosecutors, defence counsel, Provincial Court Officials, R.C.M.P. members, municipal police officers, Victim Services, victims, and other partners in the criminal justice system. This communication may include identifying the need for and making requests for additional investigative information following initial assessment of police files, preparing any correspondence required to ensure that matters are properly and quickly readied for prosecution, organizing disclosure within files if necessary, providing information about upcoming court appearances, and other tasks as identified by supervisors.

You will be responsible for reviewing files for completeness. You will send requests to the police for follow-up disclosure of missing information from the file. This will include requests for items such as missing police reports, victim/witness statements, medical records, police notes, search warrants, surveillance video, or other video. Through careful diarization, you will monitor receipt of the requested disclosure and continue to follow up if not received in a timely manner. You will also be responsible for maintaining a clear record in the file of the disclosure requested, and when, and if information is received from the police that certain disclosure does not exist or cannot be obtained, that is also to be noted.

In order to effectively carry out the required duties, you will have knowledge of legal (criminal) terminology, the Criminal Code of Canada, and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. This will include an in-depth knowledge of the legal requirements required to prove an offence contrary to the Criminal Code and the ability to assess the sufficiency of Crown files in relation to those requirements. You will also have an understanding of orders authorized by the Criminal Code, including mandatory and discretionary orders. You will have knowledge of Prosecution policies and be able to apply them in a fast-paced working environment. This will include adhering to policies regarding the collection and release of information and other policies as set by Public Prosecutions. You will also be familiar with and understand Prosecution obligations pursuant to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights Act, the Victims of Crime Act, and other legislation and case law that is applicable to the work of prosecutions.

The ideal candidate must have education in and/or experience supporting the prosecution of criminal or quasi-criminal matters.
