We are currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Trading and Origination Accounting team!
We are seeking a highly motivated Accounting Specialist to join our dynamic team at Capital Power. As an Accounting Specialist – Trading Finance, you will play a vital role in supporting our growing energy trading business by ensuring accounting results/reporting and cash flow at the transactional level accurately represent the trading activity through a combination of accounting skills, business understanding, leveraging technology, and collaboration with multiple teams and customers. The scope of the role covers power, natural gas, and/or environmental trading activities including new business initiatives and ongoing continuous process improvements. You will contribute to our team by
- Supporting month-end general ledger close processes and reporting through analysis of results, account reconciliations, daily reconciliation and check-out process for trading transactions, preparation of entries including accruals, and timely counterparty invoicing, collection and payment activities.
- Applying continuously expanding industry and accounting skills and knowledge to support the growing trading activities across North America’s power, natural gas, and renewables sectors.
- Coordinating and aligning transaction details and other data between 3rd party counterparties and ISOs, and internal business partners including but not limited to Finance, Trading and Origination, Information Services, Legal, and Risk Management groups.
- Becoming proficient working with the energy trading and risk management system (ETRM), EPM system and various other applications to execute daily and monthly activities.
- Supporting new business and systems initiatives including identification, recommendations, planning, and execution of continuous process improvement projects positively impacting the effectiveness of controls, and efficiency and effectiveness of processes.
- Establishing and maintaining a strong working rapport with both internal and external parties, including accurately responding to inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Assisting with deliverables associated with quarter-end interim reviews and year-end audits.
- Maintaining updated documentation and checklists around the accounting processes, ensuring adherence to CSOX and other internal controls.
- Adhering to HSE procedures/rules and standards.
What you will bring to the role
Education
- Degree/diploma in accounting or related field.
- Progression toward a professional accounting designation or CPA designation is an asset.
Experience:
- 3 -5 years of accounting experience with preference given to those with energy trading finance or risk management, or equivalent experience.
- Previous experience with trade accounting applications such as Allegro or TriplePoint, and EPM applications such as Oracle or SAP is considered an asset.
- The ideal candidate will be experienced in accounting/settlements, competent in developing Excel models and tools required to reconcile large amounts of data between disparate sources and understand the wholesale electricity markets and charges.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with MS Office suite of applications, Excel in particular.
- High attention to detail, analytical and strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), including the ability to work effectively with others and cultivate strong relationships across functional teams.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated project management skills.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid Office/Work from home position, with possible travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices.
- Overtime hours required during peak periods including weekends based on timing of deadlines.

Clearance of Credit check is required for this position.
