Compensation and Schedule:

  • Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $29.09.

  • Schedule: This is a casual position. Willingness to work shifts, including split shifts, weekends, and statutory holidays is required, as transit service operates 7 days per week, 21 hours per day. Casuals are required to fill in for holidays, sick days, etc., and must work a minimum of one shift per month per the collective bargaining agreement. The duration is permanent, with the potential of moving up to part or full time.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12

  • Previous driving experience in a commercial role.

  • Must hold a valid driver's license, Class 4 or higher

  • No more than 3 points in the past 5 years

  • No more than 2 violations in the past 5 years

  • No suspensions or prohibitions of any kind in the past 5 years

  • No more than 1 at fault accident in the past 5 years

  • No criminal convictions or pending charges relating directly to the Operator position

  • Willingness to undergo a road test, background check and drug & alcohol screening.

  • Fluent in Motor Vehicle or Highway Act depending on the jurisdiction

  • Fluent in Hours of Service Regulation

  • Familiar with mechanical operation of assigned vehicle

Skills:

  • Significant skills dealing effectively with the public, including demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, and sound decision-making in positions providing customer service

  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate effectively with the traveling public and to report on incidents involving safety and/or service

  • Willing to work shifts, including split shifts, weekends, and statutory holidays (transit service operates 7 days per week, 21 hours per day)

  • Able to sit for extended periods

  • Able to maintain focus on repetitive tasks

  • Able to work in a variety of light and weather conditions

  • Able to make instantaneous decisions under pressure to provide safe operation of the vehicle

Key Accountabilities:

Safe Vehicle Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate various types of transit vehicles on established routes following a published schedule.

  • Observe all traffic laws and safety rules, adhering to time schedules.

  • Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety.

  • Evaluate road conditions and mechanical issues, making necessary adjustments or arranging for assistance.

  • Carry out emergency/accident procedures as required.

Passenger Experience and Communication

  • Transport customers throughout the local region in accordance with company policies.

  • Courteously and professionally interact with customers, including assisting with mobility devices, answering inquiries, and making announcements.

  • Issue transfers, collect fares, and ensure valid passes are presented.

  • Communicate effectively with the public, dispatchers, and co-workers.

  • De-escalate conflicts and resolve problems with passengers.

Reporting and Compliance

  • Complete various vehicle and incident reports.

  • Report delays, mechanical problems, and accidents.

  • Maintain accurate daily log books.

  • Adhere to Motor Vehicle or Highway Act and Hours of Service Regulations.

  • Continuously learn and adapt to new procedures, vehicle models, and technologies.
