The Cross Connection Control (CCC) Inspector plays a key role in safeguarding drinking water by identifying and preventing potential cross connections in commercial, industrial, residential, and bulk water systems within new and existing city buildings. The position supports internal teams and external stakeholders by addressing inquiries, concerns, and compliance issues related to drinking water safety and cross connection control. Primary duties include:
- Conduct on site compliance monitoring inspections of new and existing commercial, industrial, multi-family and residential water customers piping systems to ensure cross connections within their facilities are either eliminated or protected against backflow.
- Prepare, send, and save reports, letters, and emails for the customer that identifies the infractions noted during the survey, and the corrective measures required to ensure compliance.
- Follow-up to verify the Compliance. Identify and report to the appropriate City department other deficiencies such as Plumbing and Gas Code and Meter deficiencies.
- Perform inspections and liaise with Bulk Water customers ensuring compliance with the City of Calgary Bulk Water Program.
- Research and prepare responses for requests for compliance 'Comfort Letters' from Urban Development requests by potential purchases of property.
- Respond, investigate, and follow up on emergency calls relating to the contamination of the public drinking water system including inspection of private infrastructure.
- Educate customers on the bylaw compliance requirements.
- Support testers to use and navigate the online test entry software.
- Respond to inquiries from owners/tenants, mechanical contractors, plumbers, design engineers, educators other City of Calgary departments and certified testers relating to cross connection control requirements.
Qualifications
- A Journeyperson Certificate as a Plumber or Gasfitter or provincial equivalent, recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board with at least 5 years of experience in areas such as interpreting complex piping, mechanical systems, or related trade experience.
- An American Water Works Association (AWWA) Certification as a Cross Connection Control Specialist.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR; a valid Graduated Driver's Licence (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
- Preference will be given to applicants with intermediate computer hardware and program use experience, specifically Microsoft Office Suite, web applications, smartphone, and laptop experience and proficiency.
- Success in this position requires excellent communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently, exercising good judgement and sound decision making area essential for this position.
- This position requires collaboration with team members to support compliance enforcement activities.
- Use of personal vehicle for work is required and compensated.
Working Conditions: Office environment and on-site inspections with exposure to driving hazards, construction sites, confined spaces, face to face interaction with customers and working alone. Exposure to noise, odors and extreme temperatures.

Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
