As the Design and Development Technologist, you will be responsible for ensuring that all roads and road rights-of-way are designed to operate safely and efficiently for all users. You will establish geometric designs and grades for new construction and for upgrading existing roadway infrastructure. Primary duties include:
- Review and approve detailed road and road right-of-way designs for new subdivisions and development circulations.
- Represent the Business Unit at Development Applications Review Team (DART) meetings and with external groups.
- Prepare smaller detailed horizontal and vertical geometric designs and grades for roadways in accordance with relevant City, Provincial and/or National design guidelines.
- Review cost recovery of roadway projects being administered and constructed by the City of Calgary.
Qualifications
- A completed 2 year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in roadway design using road design software (Autodesk Civil 3D) and computer aided design and drafting (MicroStation and AutoCAD).
- An advanced working knowledge of the road design aspects of the Design Guidelines for Subdivision Servicing, Roads Construction Standard Specifications and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines are required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes is required.
- Designation of Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET (Association of Science and Engineering Technology) would be considered an asset for this position.
- Experience working with Development Applications Review Team (DART), Public One Stop Service (POSSE) (software that automates and streamlines workflow associated with building, planning, engineering, code enforcement, and other municipal land management activities) and Waterfront software will be considered assets.
- The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills and a comprehensive understanding of Civil Engineering and roadway design principles.
Knowledge of the Alberta Transportation Highway and Roadside Design Guides would be an asset.

Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

- Compensation: Pay Grade 12 $48.54 - 64.88 per hour
- Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
- Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
