This course focuses on the origins, principles, scope, and purpose of EIA from both theoretical and practical perspectives, with an emphasis on the Canadian context. Students will examine the various components of environmental impact assessments and critically evaluate techniques used to assess, predict, and mitigate environmental and social impacts. Through course readings, in-class activities, assignments, and case studies, students will engage with critiques of EIA, particularly as they relate to climate change, sustainability, long-term monitoring, meaningful public engagement, Indigenous Peoples' rights, dispossession and resettlement, and environmental justice.
