About the role
Position Sumary
To operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair water and wastewater treatment and collection/distribution systems.
Duties And Responsibilities
Water Plant Operators - Operates a panel to control water treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption. Operates and controls electric motors, pumps and valves to regulate flow of well water into treating plant. Adds specified quantities of chemicals into the water to disinfect, clear, and deodorize water. Pumps purified water into water mains. Monitors controls to regulate flow rates, pressure, and distribution of water.
Wastewater Plant Operators - Operates wastewater treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater treatment plant to control flow and processing of wastewater. Monitors control panels and adjust valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of wastewater. Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements. Uses machinery to control the flow of raw sewage through the filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
Cleans and maintains tanks and filter beds using hand tools and power tools. Maintains, repairs, and lubricates equipment using hand tools and power tools.
Maintains records on plant operations and prepares reports as needed. Informs supervisor of operational irregularities. Periodically takes water samples and either conducts or forwards for testing.
May direct the work of Water/Wastewater Distribution and Collection Technicians assigned to assist in plant operation or maintenance. Tracks usage and inventory of equipment and supplies; makes and receives supply orders. Operates back-up generating equipment as needed.
Other Functions
Assists with maintaining PLUS facilities and grounds.
Assist with maintaining assigned vehicle.
Assist with collection and distribution systems duties as needed.
Responds to work during a declared state of disaster.
Performs other duties as directed.
Knowledge, Skills Abilities And Competencies Required
Knowledge of the operation and design of water and/or wastewater treatment systems.
Knowledge of the processes of water purification and/or wastewater treatment and knowledge of the purpose of each step in the process.
Knowledge in water and/or wastewater regulations and product sampling guidelines and procedures.
Knowledge of principles of water sanitization and knowledge of harmful pathogens that can impact public health.
Knowledge of proper procedures used in the maintenance and repair treatment plants.
Knowledge of safety principles related to plant operations and ability to properly add and use various chemicals. Knowledge of chemical Safety Data Sheets.
Ability to read and follow operating manuals
Ability to interpret various monitoring devices showing plant-operating condition, and to make appropriate adjustments to valves, switches, and other controls.
Skill in identifying equipment failure and other problems before they become serious.
Minimum Qualifications
Water Plant Operators - Certification as a Water Treatment Operator Level C by Florida DEP
Wastewater Plant Operators - Certification as a Waste Water Treatment Operator Level C by Florida DEP
Individuals who do not possess one of these certifications may be hired in a trainee status at reduced pay and under a formal training agreement.
Individuals who possess both certifications will receive a higher rate of pay than an individual who possesses only one certification.
Hours Of Work
At the assigned utility plant for that day. 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Overtime may be required.
Anticipated Starting Pay
Minimum $22.00 per hour and maximum rate of pay depends on qualifications and licensing. This is a full-time hourly position that includes County medical benefits and State Retirement.
