Job Details
Position Title: Health Promotion Specialist
Status: FT Support
Hours: 35 hours per week
Faculty/Department: Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) – Health Promotion Unit
Campus/Location: North Campus (4 days a week) and Lakeshore Campus (1 day a week), 9am to 5pm. Completely in-person with occasional evenings and weekends in alignment with departmental obligations (e.g. Open House) and operational hours 8:30am to 6:30pm. Option to work a compressed work week (4 days per week, 8:30am to 6:30pm).
Salary: Payband: I Salary Range: $40.39 - $46.64
Starting Salary: $40.39; Progression through the payband is in accordance with the increments in the payband as outline in the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement based on actual service in the payband.
About SWEL At Humber
The Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) department is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. The cross-functional team includes Student Connection and Community Care, Residence Life and Education, Accessible Learning Services, Mental Health and Counselling, Health Services and Health Promotion. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the Health Promotion team to lead upstream efforts in prevention and early intervention, building institutional capacity and empowering learners with skills to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
About The Health Promotion Specialist Role
Reporting to the Manager, Health Promotion, the Health Promotion Specialist provides strategic leadership in designing and embedding well-being initiatives across the learning environment. The incumbent will be responsible for the following activities:
Work closely and provide functional guidance to teams of learners to co-develop, deliver, and evaluate programs and services that promote health and enhance well-being (e.g. peer support, workshops, wellness events etc.) Develop partnerships and empower educators to effectively weave inclusive and wellness-focused curriculum and pedagogies into their instructional and program design, strategies, assessment, technology and learning outcomes. Support the development, implementation and evaluation of curricula, programs and resources that promote prevention and early intervention, fostering healthy student behaviours (e.g. topics related to mental health literacy, harm reduction, resilience, substance use, healthy eating, socialization etc.). Design and coordinate learning opportunities that foster health promotion change agents to support future citizens with the capacity to promote health beyond campuses. Apply the social determinants of health as well as evidence-informed, student-centred, anti-oppressive and culturally safe principles in developing strategies and approaches. Education
Successful completion of a Master’s degree in an academic discipline that is transferable to the role (e.g., education, psychology, public health, health promotion, health counselling etc.). Mental health response or suicide alertness training (e.g., ASIST, SafeTALK etc.) is an asset.
Experience/Skills
Minimum 3 years of experience with knowledge of intersectional, anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices relating to mental health, harm reduction, social-emotional learning, and suicide prevention. Previous experience with recruiting, training and leading student teams Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate wellbeing programs which translate student development, health promotion, and health behaviour change theory to practice. Demonstrated experience with establishing communication materials and coordination through to execution and results. Excellent knowledge of promising practices in health and wellbeing education, including traditional instruction, on-line learning, video, social media, web, and print. Strong understanding of program efficacy in wellness programming. Excellent knowledge of student-centered practice with experience co-designing programs and services with students. Experience applying health-promoting frameworks to develop and execute programs e.g., Canadian Mental Health Standard, Okanagan Charter, Stepped Care 2.0 Excellent conflict resolution, interpersonal, client relationship, and communication skills (oral, written, and presentation). Excellent leadership skills. Excellent project management skills, including budget administration. Ability to engage and build rapport with various stakeholders and members of the college community. Strong technical proficiency, ability to use digital tools and platforms such as Canva, Microsoft 365 (e.g. OneDrive, Microsoft Bookings), Mentimeter and Instagram.
