About the role
SD8 is looking for a teacher to deliver the Columbia River Field School Program between June 30 - July 22, 2026
Qualifications:
** **· A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch;
Additional Qualifications: · Current Wilderness First Aid certification;
· A minimum of Basic (Lake Water Level 1) Canoe Instructor certification- Recreation Canoeing Association of BC (or equivalent);
Preferred Qualifications · Valid BC Class 4 Driver's License
The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of effective collaboration in outdoor educational contexts. They will demonstrate the necessary skills, experience, and qualifications to lead and instruct in canoeing, backcountry camping, and outdoor leadership with competence. Additionally, the selected individual will have a deep understanding of and ability to engage a diverse range of students with a range of outdoor experience levels.
They will exhibit innovation and creativity, alongside a comprehensive knowledge of the BC curriculum and SD8 strategic directions, as well as thorough knowledge of School District 8 field trip administrative procedures. This individual will be committed to ongoing pedagogical improvement within the evolving landscape of outdoor education.
Teachers applying for this position must possess the following attributes:

Willingness and ability to work closely with instructor team;

Excellent outdoor education and risk management skills;
-
Physical ability to work outdoors, for long days and in variable weather and for 15 days straight;

Familiarity with Columbia River geography and paddling routes;
-
Knowledge of Columbia River history, culture, and development an asset
-
Knowledge and application of current inclusive instructional practices and curriculum;
-
Demonstration of inclusive education practices;
-
Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills;
-
Recent, demonstrated successful experience in a middle or high school setting;
-
A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues;
-
Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to be flexible;
The ideal candidate will be expected to:
-
Deliver lessons on canoeing and backcountry camping, including leave-no-trace ethics, campcraft and risk management, and support lessons on Columbia River geography, hydrology, ecology as well as history, culture and development.

Employ SEL and trauma-informed practices

Support instructor team in food and equipment planning and packing as part of prep days

Work in an atmosphere of collaboration with staff to build consistency and quality of programs

Communicate effectively with staff and parents

Be familiar with the BC curriculum, school district board goals, school goals, and SD8 administrative procedures

Demonstrated ability to use inclusive instruction to meet the learning needs of diverse learners.

Demonstrated knowledge/experience working from an inclusion perspective to address diverse learning needs.

Salary Range; $68,589 - $114,833 per year, in accordance with the current SD8–Kootenay Lake / KLTF Collective Agreement. Placement on the salary grid is based on qualifications and years of teaching experience as evaluated by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).
**Job Description & Requirements **
