About the Role
The Sports Field Technician will report to the Parks and Property Supervisor and be responsible for completing a wide variety of technical and labouring duties related to the management of sports fields (natural and synthetic turf). This position will be responsible for assisting in the development of maintenance programs to be delivered by Municipal staff, and to oversee the services that are provided by contractors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assists with the development and implementation of an annual turf care program addressing pest and disease management, soil fertility management, protection and enhancement of turf playing fields, infield maintenance, calibration and maintenance of equipment, special projects as needed.
- Assists the Supervisor with coordinating daily planning and organizing of materials, supplies and equipment to carry out daily job assignments following best practices relating to the maintenance of all sports fields including mowing, aerating, fertilizing, over-seeding, dragging, lining, top dressing and edging.
- Monitors and assesses turf conditions, identifying maintenance needs.
- Maintains, operates and repairs irrigation systems and equipment, including programming controllers and timers and adjusting as needed.
- Assists with monitoring contractors performing work associated with sports field maintenance, providing feedback to the Supervisor on compliance with contract specifications and expectations.
- Documents and maintains records of inspections, maintenance and repairs completed on all sports field infrastructure.
- Operates various types of vehicles and equipment, such as top dressers, overseeders, loaders, tractors and mowers, adhering to prescribed safety practices while operating equipment in order to ensure the safety of the public and co-workers.
- Delivers exceptional customer service when dealing with members of the public, user groups, residents, etc.
- Provides guidance on field maintenance training for staff assigned to municipal sports fields.
- Provides recommendations for ordering supplies related to sports field maintenance.
- Provides input on the preparation of the annual operating budget and capital program related to sports field maintenance.
- Reviews sports field, drainage and irrigation designs from a technical/maintenance perspective.
- Participates in winter snow and ice control.
- Available for afterhours call in.
- Adheres to prescribed safety practices while operating equipment and Municipal vehicles to ensure the safety of the traveling public and co-workers.
- Ensures all duties are be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, municipal policies, and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including those specific to the division.
What you bring
- Successful completion of a Turf Management diploma at an accredited post-secondary institution and a minimum of two (2) years Turfgrass Maintenance experience, including related equipment, or possess the equivalent education and experience to the satisfaction of the Director of Public Works.
- Valid Ministry of the Environment Landscape Exterminators license or equivalent.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the maintenance, operation and repair of natural turf irrigation systems.
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class “DZ”.
- Integrated Pest Management Accreditation will be considered an asset.
- Experience with winter snow and ice control operations will be considered an asset.
- Proficient in computer software applications including, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and other Municipal Departments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Demonstrated planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- A commitment to exceptional customer service and professionalism.
- Must be capable of performing necessary physical duties for responsibilities listed above.
- A current WHMIS Training Certificate and valid First Aid Certificate would be an asset.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

- Wage: $34.66 to $43.27 - Code 6 of the 2025 Outside Collective Agreement.

- Hours of work: 40 hours per week including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Additional Information
Public Works Employees are subject to standby, on call duty and may be required to work out of any Public Works location depending on work schedules and staff requirements. Employees hired externally or from another Department will be scheduled into shifts Monday through Sunday. The successful candidate will be expected to respond to after-hours calls especially during the winter season program.
A satisfactory criminal record check and proof of qualifications will be required for the successful candidate, including:
- Proof of a current Driver’s Abstract, and a valid Ontario Class “DZ” Driver’s License.
Pre-employment testing may consist of written and oral assessments. To be considered successful, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 60% on each test. The highest score attained across the assessments will be used in the final award decision.
