Senior Underground Mine Manager
About the role
A leading mining operator is seeking a Senior Underground Mine Manager to take responsibility for all aspects of underground mining at a remote, large-scale hard rock operation in Canada.
This is a technically significant sub-level stoping environment with both open pit and underground mining activities, producing approximately 2.8 million tonnes per annum. The operation forms part of a broader integrated mining and processing network and includes substantial on-site infrastructure such as processing, port and loading facilities, tailings management, utilities, workshops, transport, engineering, laboratory, power generation, accommodation, catering, medical and recreational facilities.
The site is located in a remote northern environment and presents the kind of operational complexity that appeals to experienced mining leaders. Challenges include fly-in fly-out rotations, complex logistics, harsh weather conditions, environmental sensitivity, supply chain constraints, workforce support requirements and operating in an isolated setting.
The Senior Underground Mine Manager will lead a team of four Underground Mine Superintendents and a wider reporting structure of approximately 550 employees across multiple operational disciplines. The role also acts as deputy to the Director of Operations. This is an exciting opportunity to join an established asset following a major ramp-up phase, with further growth and expansion opportunities ahead.
The successful candidate and their family will be based in a major city in Atlantic Canada, operating on a 1:1 rotational schedule.
Key deliverables will include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring operations are conducted in compliance with all company and legislative safety and environmental requirements
- Delivering total product cost and unit cost commitments
- Developing and executing operating strategies, practices and procedures to achieve safety, environmental, production and cost objectives
- Overseeing maintenance strategies to maximise reliability, performance and business outcomes
- Prioritising and managing capital expenditure to support long-term safety, environmental, production and cost performance
- Leading mine services functions supporting the operating areas
- Ensuring the safe operation of critical site services including backfill or sand plant systems, power, communications, ventilation, dewatering, access and egress
The role will also support a significant pipeline of capital projects as part of the owner’s team. This includes direct operational leadership input into a major underground expansion involving vertical shaft development, expected to deliver an additional 1 million tonnes per annum of production.
