Position Summary
The Senior Financial Planner is a key member of the Finance team responsible for providing strategic financial leadership, business analysis, financial planning, and accounting support to drive the company's financial performance and long-term growth. Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, this role oversees financial planning and analysis (FP&A), budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, cost accounting, financial reporting, and treasury support while ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal controls. The position serves as a trusted business partner to cross-functional departments, delivering actionable financial insights, identifying opportunities to improve profitability, optimize costs, strengthen cash flow, and enhance operational efficiency. The incumbent will evaluate capital investments, provide recommendations on cash management and investment strategies, assess financial risks and opportunities, and support executive management in making informed strategic decisions. This role also plays an integral part in driving continuous process improvements, strengthening financial governance, and supporting the company's sustainable growth and long-term financial success. Job Responsibilities
Treasury, Investment & Financial Strategy Partner with the Financial Controller and senior management to develop financial strategies that support the company's long-term growth and profitability. Analyze the company's cash position, liquidity, and capital requirements, providing recommendations to optimize cash utilization and working capital. Evaluate investment opportunities for excess cash, considering risk, return, liquidity, and the company's financial objectives. Prepare financial analyses and business cases to support capital investments, equipment purchases, facility expansion, and other strategic initiatives. Monitor market trends, interest rates, and economic conditions to provide recommendations on financing, borrowing, and investment strategies. Assist in developing short- and long-term cash flow projections to identify financial risks and recommend strategies to protect the company's assets and improve financial performance. Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations to support executive decision-making, business growth, and long-term sustainability. Financial Planning, Analysis & Team Leadership Lead and oversee the company's financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting processes. Supervise, coach, and develop the Financial Analyst, ensuring the timely completion, accuracy, and quality of all financial analyses, reports, forecasts, and budgets. Review and validate financial models, forecasting assumptions, variance analyses, and management reports prepared by the Financial Analyst. Ensure all financial information presented to management is accurate, reliable, and aligned with the company's financial objectives. Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations to improve profitability, operational efficiency, and business performance. Review product, customer, and business segment profitability analyses and recommend improvement initiatives. Partner with department leaders to evaluate financial performance and identify opportunities for cost optimization and revenue growth. Present financial results, business performance, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to the Financial Controller and senior management.
Cost Accounting & Manufacturing Finance Oversee the company's standard costing system and ensure the accuracy of product costing and inventory valuation. Review manufacturing cost analyses, inventory reconciliations, and variance reports prepared by the Finance team. Ensure manufacturing variances, including material usage, labor efficiency, overhead absorption, and production waste, are properly analyzed and resolved. Partner with Production, Operations, Procurement, and Supply Chain teams to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve manufacturing efficiency. Review and approve costing assumptions for new products, production changes, and inventory valuation. Support the evaluation of capital expenditures, equipment purchases, and operational investment proposals through financial analysis and business case reviews. Ensure inventory control procedures and costing methodologies comply with company policies and accounting standards.
Accounting & Financial Reporting Oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting. Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, internal controls, and company financial policies. Coordinate internal and external audit activities and ensure audit requests are completed accurately and on time. Monitor general ledger integrity and ensure accounting issues are identified and resolved promptly. Review cash flow forecasts, working capital analyses, and financial performance metrics to support management decision-making.
Business Partnership Partner with department managers to review financial performance, monitor budgets, and provide actionable insights. Review and challenge financial analysis prepared by the Financial Analyst, including profitability, pricing, and cost performance. Support Sales with pricing strategies, customer profitability analysis, and margin optimization initiatives. Collaborate with Procurement to assess supplier cost changes and their financial impact on the business. Work with Operations and Supply Chain to interpret financial results and support initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize inventory. Provide financial interpretation, recommendations, and decision support for operational and strategic initiatives. Act as a key financial advisor to cross-functional teams, ensuring financial implications are properly understood and considered.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (Accounting strongly preferred) Minimum 3-7 years of progressive experience in accounting, financial planning, and manufacturing finance. Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial and operational data Solid understanding of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE) Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cost accounting, and inventory management. Proficiency with ERP systems (Business Central experience is a strong asset) Advanced Excel skills; ability to work with large data sets Ability to work independently while collaborating across functions CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset
Job Type Full Time (Permanent) Monday – Friday 9am-5pm (Included 30mins unpaid lunch)
