Leadership Opportunity - Secretary-Treasurer (CFO)
About the role
School District No. 28 (Quesnel) invites applications for the position of Secretary-Treasurer , a key member of the District’s senior Leadership team.

The Quesnel School District provides a broad range of educational services to approximately 3,000 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. The District serves 12 elementary schools, one junior school, one secondary school, an alternate education program, and four StrongStart locations. As the second largest employer in the community, the District manages an operating budget of approximately $49 million.

The Position
Reporting directly to the Superintendent of Schools/CEO, the Secretary- Treasurer serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the District and Secretary-Treasurer to the Board of Education.
As a key member of the District Leadership Team, the Secretary-Treasurer provides strategic leadership and oversight for the financial, legal, operational, and business affairs of the District. This executive role supports the effective operation of the Board of Education and ensures responsible stewardship of public resources in alignment with the Board’s vision, strategic priorities, and commitment to student learning.
The role works collaboratively with the Superintendent, Board, staff, and community partners to support student success through sound financial and operational leadership.
The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for:
- Leading the development of annual operating and capital budgets aligned with the Board’s strategic priorities and long-term plans
- Providing strategic financial advice to the Superintendent and Board to support informed decision-making and effective stewardship of District resources
- Overseeing all financial operations, including accounting, payroll, audit, financial reporting, cash flow management, purchasing, and internal controls
- Ensuring compliance with the School Act, FOIPPA, public sector accounting standards, and other applicable legislation and regulatory requirements
- Advising and supporting the Board on all aspects of business and operational matters, including the development and implementation of policies and administrative procedures
- Providing strategic leadership and direction to finance and operational departments, with executive oversight of facilities, transportation, maintenance risk management, and insurance services.
- Serving as Corporate Secretary to the Board of Education and supporting Board governance processes and corporate affairs
- Building and maintaining strong working relationships with local governments, Indigenous rightsholders, partner organizations, employee groups, and the broader community
- Ensuring financial and operational practices support student achievement, equity, and organizational effectiveness
- Leading continuous innovation and continuous improvement in financial and operational systems and processes
- Fostering a collaborative, service-oriented culture across the organization
The****Candidate
Our District is seeking a highly competent and collaborative leader with exemplary interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to public education and student success.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Fundamental commitment to public education, students, and the school community
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
- Superior interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated senior management/executive leadership level success, ideally in a BC public school district or similarly complex public-sector organization
- Exemplary financial planning, budgeting, and management skills
- Extensive knowledge and experience with computerized financial administration systems
- Collaborative, motivating, & service-oriented leadership approach grounded in integrity, accountability, transparency, & respect
- Demonstrated success leading and supervising staff in a unionized environment
- Senior leadership experience in finance and operations, preferably within the education sector
- Strong knowledge of public sector accounting standards, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Experience managing risk, legal, labour, insurance, facilities, or operational matters
- Ability to build trust & maintain positive working relationships with the Board, staff, employee groups, & community partners
Compensation
The salary range for the position is $183,284 to $203,649, placement on the range is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
