The Opportunity
The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting a Journeyperson Powerline Technician to fill a permanent full-time position. This position requires journeyperson-level skills in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission lines.
Top Key Responsibilities
- Construct and Install Electrical Distribution and Transmission Systems - Participate in the construction and installation of overhead and underground electrical distribution infrastructure.
- Maintain and Repair Power Lines and Equipment - Perform maintenance and repairs on electrical distribution and transmission lines, transformers, meters, and related equipment.
- Install Electrical Components - Install transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, fused switches, breakers, cross arms, insulators, conductors, and associated hardware.
- Perform Line Work on Energized Systems - Safely work on or adjacent to energized high-voltage distribution lines (4 kV and 25 kV systems).
- Set Utility Poles and String Conductors - Erect poles, string wire, and complete related line construction activities following industry standards and safety requirements.
- Conduct Underground Power Construction and Maintenance - Pull cables, install underground equipment, set transformers, construct substations, and perform related underground electrical work.
- Operate Specialized Utility Vehicles and Equipment - Drive and operate line trucks and specialized equipment such as winches, hydraulic ladders, gin poles, and pole-hole augers.
- Respond to Emergency and After-Hours Service Calls - Troubleshoot and resolve power outages, downed power lines, streetlight failures, traffic light issues, and other emergency electrical service interruptions.
- Troubleshoot Electrical Distribution Problems - Independently diagnose and resolve electrical system failures and operational issues to restore reliable service.
- Maintain Health, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance - Follow all occupational health and safety requirements, participate in safety programs and training, conduct hazard assessments, report incidents, and ensure safe work practices for employees and the public.
As our preferred candidate, you will have
- Possession of a Journeyperson Powerline Technician certificate with Red Seal
- Class 3 Drivers License with Q Endorsement
- Knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in high tension electric distribution and transmission line construction and maintenance work.
- Some knowledge of the principles of electric theory as applied to electric distribution and transmission systems.
- Knowledge of first aid including artificial respiration.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to climb poles and work with high tension wires, exercising proper safety precautions.
- Skill in the use of line tools and testing equipment.
- Good physical condition and health, sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual and climbing tasks under adverse weather conditions.

Status: Regular Full-time Remuneration: $64.38 per hour Hours of Work: 80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.
