About the role
Role Summary
The Office Editorial Director oversees editorial operations, manages editorial teams, and ensures the quality, integrity, and efficiency of publishing workflows within MDPI. This role is responsible for developing editorial strategies, maintaining high publishing standards, managing editorial personnel, and supporting the continued growth and success of MDPI’s scientific publishing operations.
The Office Editorial Director works closely with internal departments, academic editors, authors, reviewers, and international stakeholders to ensure efficient manuscript processing and adherence to ethical and industry publishing standards.
Core Responsibilities
Editorial Operations & Publishing Management
Plan, organize, direct, control, and evaluate the operations of editorial and publishing departments. Develop and implement editorial policies, standards, and procedures to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in publishing output. Oversee manuscript submission, peer review, revision, and publication processes to ensure timely delivery of scientific content. Manage editorial workflows and production schedules to support efficient publication operations. Establish and maintain quality control standards for scientific manuscripts and published materials.
Editorial Team Management
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate editorial staff, including editors, deputy managing editors, and related personnel. Provide guidance and support to editorial teams to improve performance, workflow efficiency, and professional development. Monitor editorial performance metrics and implement improvements to enhance productivity and publication quality.
Publishing Quality & Compliance
Ensure compliance with publishing ethics, open access policies, and industry standards. Support the maintenance of high standards for scientific integrity, peer review processes, and editorial decision-making. Liaise with authors, reviewers, academic editors, and international collaborators to support effective peer review and publishing processes.
Cross-Departmental & Strategic Collaboration
Coordinate with internal departments, including production, marketing, IT, and indexing teams, to support publishing operations. Provide scientific and editorial expertise to support MDPI’s open access publishing model and journal development strategies. Support collaboration with international editorial teams and global stakeholders to strengthen publishing operations. Participate in strategic initiatives aimed at expanding journal impact, quality, and scientific reach.
External Engagement & Travel
Travel occasionally to attend internal meetings, editorial workshops, training sessions, and international publishing conferences as required
Qualifications & Experience
University degree in a relevant field such as science, publishing, communications, or a related discipline. Advanced academic qualifications (such as a Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field) are considered an asset. Minimum five years of progressive experience within the scientific publishing industry. Experience working in an open access publishing environment is required. Demonstrated experience managing editorial teams and complex publishing workflows. Strong understanding of academic publishing standards, peer review processes, and publication ethics. Experience working within an international, multi-office publishing organization is considered an asset.
Requirements
Excellent written and spoken English language skills. Advanced knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced international environment. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities. Strong attention to detail while maintaining a strategic perspective. Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and global stakeholders.
Terms of Employment
Full-time position (40 hours per week). Two - Three-year employment term.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $50,000–$95,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
