About the role
Reporting to the Manager, the Maintenance Crew supports repairs, maintenance, foreshore clean-up, and waste management across Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) properties and facilities in the Inner Harbour. The role helps ensure GVHA sites are clean, well maintained, cared for, and safe for public and customer use.
Specific Accountabilities
- Collects, cleans, and removes garbage, recycling, leaves, sand, snow, logs, unknown containers, sharp objects, graffiti, and other debris from GVHA facilities and properties, including water lots, piers, the breakwater, floats, ramps, walkways, walls, foreshore areas, buildings, grounds, workshops, washrooms, signs, posts, and parking lots.
- Cleans docks, equipment, and grounds with a pressure washer.
- Visually inspects GVHA facilities and properties and reports waste management, maintenance, or safety concerns to the manager.
- Performs light-duty repairs to facility assemblies and components as directed, which may include carpentry, irrigation repairs, or component assembly.
- Supports a high level of customer service and public safety across GVHA facilities and in the Maintenance team’s daily activities.
- Demonstrates proficient driving ability of company vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
- Participates in other cleaning and general maintenance activities when required.
Working Conditions
- Regular, full-time position, 40 hours per week.
- Shifts available are Monday to Friday and Wednesday to Sunday.
- During fall and winter, the typical shifts are 7:00am to 3:30pm including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
- In spring and summer, the typical shifts are 6:30am to 3:00pm including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
- Hourly rate of $25.00. Following 3 months in the role, this position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including extended health and dental coverage (premiums 100% paid by GVHA), RRSP matching starting at 2%, annual bonus eligibility, training support, health spending accounts, paid vacation, additional paid and non-paid leave.
- Occasional statutory holiday, evening, or weekend coverage may be required.
- Possibility of overtime or emergency call-in during special events or inclement weather.
- Working primarily in an outdoor setting in all types of weather. Necessary PPE and outdoor gear provided.
- Maintenance shop environment.
- Working from and around ladders, floats, piers, vessels, and other hazardous conditions.
- Physically demanding position that includes regular lifting of objects or garbage cans up to 50 lbs, including repetitive motions, inclines, and unstable or uneven terrain.
- Operates and maintains tools and equipment including small hand tools, leaf blowers, pressure washers, and chainsaws.
- Operates motorized vehicles which includes work truck with power tail gates, small marine vessels, skid steer, forklift, and scissor lift.
- Operates pump out boat to transport, remove and dispose of black water from moorage customers.
- Position involves daily walking throughout GVHA facilities.
Experience and Education
- Previous experience and skills in custodial work and building/facility repairs and maintenance is an asset.
- Experience and knowledge in the safe use of hand and power tools and equipment operation.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and clean drivers abstract required.
- Experience working with and assisting the public.
- Experience in marina environments is an asset.
- General construction knowledge and carpentry skills preferred.
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) and boating experience is an asset, training is provided if needed.

About Greater Victoria Harbour Authority
Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) was incorporated as a not-for-profit society in February 2002, and began operating its four port facilities, divested from Transport Canada, in April 2002. Acting as an advocate for the harbour, the GVHA is working to improve its function as a working harbour, and a marine transportation centre with a strong focus on tourism.
GVHA is a society registered with the Province of British Columbia and the Constitution and Bylaws of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority are governed under the Society Act of British Columbia.
GVHA's Board is comprised of Directors representing the its member agencies and organizations (Esquimalt Nation, Songhees Nation, City of Victoria, Township of Esquimalt, the Victoria/Esquimalt Harbour Society, Tourism Victoria, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, and the Capital Regional district) and four community directors.
