Community Impact

As a Veterinarian you will have direct impact on reducing the pet population and supporting our purpose of keeping pets and people together. In addition to having centres across the province, the Ontario SPCA operates spay/neuter and wellness clinics, SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit, and hosts MASH-style clinics to bring routine care and spay/neuter services to underserved communities. We also find loving homes for thousands of animals each year at our animal centres across the province – animals who depend on the compassion of a veterinary care team to bring them back to health so they can get their second chance.

Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, licensed, full-time Veterinarian in a hybrid role responsible for supporting Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Centres with medical oversight and support for both individual medical cases and population-based medicine cases. Registered veterinarians work under the direction of the Medical Director and VP, Operations, supporting the maintenance of preventative health programs and shelter medicine protocols. Delivery of care is provided through a hybrid model of telemedicine services as well as on-site visits. Species supported primarily include cats and dogs, but opportunities to support small animals and birds are also available.

A Typical Day

• Provide telemedicine services and in-person support for individual and population-based medical cases across 6-7 provincial Ontario SPCA Animal Centres. Services are provided for both animals in shelter and animals out of shelter in foster homes.
• Actively advocate for animals in care in collaboration with Ontario SPCA Animal Centre teams across the province to ensure medical, emotional, and behavioural needs are being met through daily and weekly rounds with Ontario SPCA Centre Managers, RVT’s and animal care staff.
• Provide direct medical oversight for populations of animals transferred into care through the Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Transfer Hub. Responsibilities include physical examinations, intake procedures and specialized testing and disease tracking based upon origin, as well as disease outbreak management.
• Utilizes Society’s shelter medicine software to monitor, support, and track animals in care across the province virtually.
• Medical case collaboration with external VCPRs and specialists.
• Development of policies, protocols and disclosures in collaboration with Shelter Health & Wellness team.
• Ensures Ontario SPCA policies and procedures related to infection control are followed.
• Research, track and implement shelter intake measures for emerging infectious diseases across the province and within communities where transferred animals originate.
• Actively participate in continuing education activities to keep up with latest advancements and expert recommendations within the field of shelter medicine.

• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the province of Ontario
• Be a member of good standing of the CVO
• Population-based medicine and shelter medicine experience are an asset
• Experience in tele-medicine or similar role in veterinary clinic

• Demonstrated working knowledge and commitment to animal welfare practices and philosophies
• Excellent communication (written and verbal)
• Sound judgement and decision making ability
