Job Location: Edmonds Employment type: Permanent Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Annual Salary: $ $ 109,700.00 - 138,700.00 No. of positions: 3 Closing date: August 31, 2026 About the job: What you’ll do • The Distribution Standards team supports communities across British Columbia from our Burnaby (Edmonds) office. Our group is made up of a skilled and diverse set of engineering professionals who develop construction standards and select, specify, and approve equipment for use throughout BC Hydro's Distribution System. The team also works closely with Operations, supporting failure investigations and providing engineering expertise to both internal and external engineers and designers so that the distribution system is operated, maintained, repaired, upgraded, replaced, and expanded with a strong focus on safety. We currently have openings in two teams: Systems, Automation, and Protection (2) — Focuses on standards for distribution automation, control systems, and related technologies that support system reliability and modernization. Customer Electrical Services (1) — Develops standards related to customer connections, metering, service entrance requirements, and the interface between BC Hydro's distribution system and customer-owned electrical infrastructure. Each team plays a distinct and critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and evolution of BC Hydro's distribution infrastructure. In this role, you will: • Develop and maintain standards — Create, revise, and update construction, design, and commissioning standards for BC Hydro's Distribution System within your team's area of expertise. • Equipment evaluation and approval — Plan and conduct field trials, assess new equipment and technologies, and collaborate with field crews and vendors to approve equipment for system-wide use. • Provide technical expertise — Serve as a subject matter resource to Distribution Engineering, Distribution Design, Asset Planning, and Operations teams, offering guidance on standards interpretation, equipment application, and complex technical issues within your team's specialty. • Investigate and resolve engineering challenges — Analyze and resolve a range of complex and unique engineering problems, including failure investigations and safety-related assessments. • Stakeholder engagement — Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to build consensus, encourage innovation, and develop engineering solutions that prioritize safety, environmental protection, cost-effectiveness, and the needs of employees and the public. • Support modernization initiatives — Contribute to the advancement of standards development processes, including adoption of modern engineering design tools and AI-assisted workflows. • Build professional relationships — Cultivate strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and cross-functional teams to set • priorities, evaluate work impacts, and address concerns. • Work with independence — Operate within broad objectives and guidelines, exercising sound engineering judgment and consulting your manager on critical or high-impact projects. What you bring • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized or accredited university. Candidates with degrees in other engineering disciplines may be considered where substantial relevant experience can be demonstrated. • Registration, or demonstrated progress toward registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Equivalent professional registration with other Canadian or international jurisdictions will also be considered. • Relevant engineering experience. Typically, 8+ years for Senior Engineer roles. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered for junior roles including engineers in training. • Demonstrate experience in overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages up to 35 kV. • Have strong verbal and written communication skills, allowing you to clearly explain technical options, present solutions to diverse audiences, and tailor your approach to different levels of understanding. • Exhibit proven leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and interpersonal abilities. • Demonstrate excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities. • Apply practical knowledge and sound judgment to effectively analyze and resolve issues. Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and registration or progress toward P.Eng. status with EGBC. Candidates should have relevant experience in overhead or underground utility distribution systems, ideally with 8+ years for senior roles.
