Job summary
We have an opportunity for a full-time/permanent position for an engineering internship program that will lead into a future shift supervisor role in our Operations Department, located in Hamilton, Ontario. Candidates must have an engineering background and be interested in a career in heavy manufacturing in the production department. The successful applicant can expect an extended training period in all aspects of the Birla Carbon manufacturing operations in order to learn the process from the ground up. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for leading, supervising, coaching and coordinating production personnel (operators) while monitoring production to ensure product quality and department objectives are met in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. This position is not for someone looking to work in the engineering department specifically, but rather wanting a career in manufacturing operations. Perform periodic inspections of equipment to observe operating conditions and need for repair or adjustment. Planning, scheduling and coordinating our production processes and procedures to meet our operational objectives. Develop and maintain positive employee relations and a collaborative work environment. Develop and maintain excellent employee awareness, morale, customer satisfaction, and commitment through goal-focused employee training, supervision, daily communication, recognition, performance management, coaching, counseling, personal involvement and on-going employee feedback. Collaborate with all personnel, in all departments, to ensure reliable and consistent operation of the plant on a regular basis. Ensuring the quality of our customer products. Providing leadership in a customer-focused quality driven organization Foster and promote with all employees an environment of continuous improvement; in particular, by identifying and recommending improvements to improve the overall efficiency of department. Perform all duties consistent with a hands-on perspective and a visible presence in our plant areas. Perform other relevant duties as required. Requirements: Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degree is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to safety and the environment. Experience in continuous process, chemical, or carbon-black manufacturing plant is an asset. Knowledge of DCS (Distributed control systems), or similar supervisory control and data acquisition industrial control applications Excellent understanding of production processes, equipment, instrument monitoring equipment, safety, quality, and environmental standards. Experience in plant maintenance/reliability; with rotating equipment, pumps, fans, blowers, bucket elevators, conveyer belts, dust collectors, venting and piping is an asset. 3+ years’ experience in an industrial manufacturing and/or continuous process environment is an asset. Demonstrated ability to identify and troubleshoot production related issues/problems and respond accordingly with corrective actions. Experience in a supervisory or leadership role is an asset. Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and to adapt quickly to changing priorities; Practical computer skills: (MS Office, MS Project, SAP, etc.) Work Conditions/Schedule: Able to operate basic mechanical tools safety and efficiently. Able to work in outdoor weather conditions and ability to climb several flights of stairs (work at heights) on a regular basis. Continental rotating shift work (ie, 2, 2, 3); including alternating weekends, nights (2-weeks days/2-weeks nights) and holidays. Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
