The department: Based in Toronto, Playback is the foremost authority on the Canadian TV and film industry. We publish up-to-the-minute news and analysis for readers on our website playbackonline.ca, distributed five days a week via Playback Daily, our subscription-based newsletter. The job: We’re looking for an experienced journalist looking to take on a new challenge as News Editor on our team in Toronto. This is for an existing vacancy within Brunico Communications. This position is for a six-month contract to begin in September, with the possibility of a longer-term role in the future. The News Editor will source, assign and edit the daily news lineup, as well as contribute enterprise stories. As an editorial lead of Playback’s daily news, your responsibilities will include managing the daily news publication and team to ensure that the Playback Daily newsletter deploys Monday to Friday, filled with a robust slate of timely news, exclusives and analysis, in addition to managing and filing breaking stories as they happen. The remit includes researching, writing and/or assigning stories, coordinating and managing all online editorial content. You’ll work with the Playback editor on annual features and support other digital content, which range from audio and video works. If you know how to apply a business lens to identify the issues, trends and ideas that would be most relevant to film and TV industry readers, and have a tenacious appetite for uncovering fresh stories and breaking news, we want to hear from you. Playback staff members also have the opportunity to contribute editorially to events such as the Banff World Media Festival, a market-leading conference and festival dedicated to global television, film and digital content which is held annually in June. Qualifications: ● University degree in Journalism, Media or Communications ● At least four years of experience as a journalist ● Efficient skills at copy editing and collaborating with freelancers ● Inside knowledge of the film and television industry would be an asset ● Ability to edit video and/or audio is an asset ● Strong news sense ● Experience and comfort with establishing and maintaining key editorial relationships with exec-level contacts ● Outstanding editorial standards and judgment ● An eye for detail and copy consistency ● Highly developed organizational and time management skills ● Proficiency with PC platforms, Microsoft Office, WordPress, InCopy, Photoshop ● Team player attitude and able to take the initiative when needed ● Ability to travel within Canada and attend events outside of work hours, as needed What’s in it for you? ● A competitive salary commensurate with experience level.
