Capital Power is seeking a highly motivated and analytical individual to join our Western US Trading team. This exciting opportunity is for a trader who will join the desk to dispatch and optimize the company’s assets, identify and execute speculative trading opportunities across short-term physical and financial power and gas markets in WECC, CAISO, SPP, and ERCOT. The candidate will also be involved in supporting the development and execution of structured transactions, long-term hedging strategies, and portfolio management initiatives. The successful candidate will have a quantitative background with a proven track record of creating and executing physical power flows across the Western U.S., financial trading strategies, and risk management strategies. You will contribute to our team by: Optimizing Capital Power’s assets across the WECC/CAISO across different trading horizons, from daily dispatch and short-term execution to developing and expressing views in the forward markets. Developing and supporting ongoing speculative power and gas trading strategies across physical and financial markets. Supporting the pricing, evaluation, and execution of structured deals, providing market intelligence, commercial feedback, and trading perspectives throughout the development and negotiation process. Managing relationships with counterparties, customers and brokers, including the negotiation of master agreements, EMAs and AMAs where applicable. Applying risk management practices to mitigate losses and ensure compliance with policies and regulations. Collaborating with Operations, Risk Management, and Finance departments to support trading activities. What you will bring to the role: Education: Degree(s) in Engineering, Physics, Math, Economics, Finance, or a related field. Experience: 3+ years of experience in physical power trading in real time or day ahead, with experience purchasing and flowing power throughout WECC on many transmission service providers, specifically in the Western US Experience importing and exporting power between CAISO, SPP, and WECC Technical Skills: Proven ability to analyze large datasets, develop analytical models, and draw actionable insights. Proficiency in relevant trading platforms and analytical tools, such as Python, SQL, and R. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Working Conditions: This is an office-based position located in Capital Power’s Calgary office. Additional Details: This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
