Lactation Consultant

Company Description Carlington Community Health Centre is a community-focused organization that supports individuals in taking control of their health while improving overall community wellbeing. The Centre offers a broad range of health, mental health, and addictions services for parents, children, youth, teens, and seniors. Services are delivered through workshops, drop-ins, support groups, community meetings, training, outreach, counselling, and education programs. In addition, the Centre helps Carlington residents address local issues by providing organizational support and advocacy assistance to community groups and associations. Role Description The Lactation Consultant is a full-time, on-site role located in Ottawa, ON. This position provides evidence-based breastfeeding and chestfeeding support to parents and families through one-on-one consultations, group sessions, and community-based programming. Day-to-day activities include assessing feeding challenges, developing care plans, demonstrating positioning and latch techniques, and monitoring progress. The consultant collaborates with interprofessional team members, documents client interactions in accordance with clinical and privacy standards, and contributes to workshops and educational materials. The role also involves outreach to diverse communities, advocating for inclusive family-centered care, and participating in quality improvement and health promotion initiatives. Qualifications Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or equivalent, with current good standing. Post-secondary education in nursing, midwifery, public health, social work, or a related health discipline, or a combination of education and experience. Demonstrated skills in clinical assessment of feeding, lactation management, and development of individualized care plans. Strong communication and counselling skills, including the ability to provide trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and non-judgmental support. Experience facilitating groups, workshops, or community education sessions for parents, caregivers, and families. Ability to work effectively in an interprofessional team and collaborate with community partners and referral sources. Proficiency in maintaining accurate clinical documentation and using electronic health records. Knowledge of community health, social determinants of health, and issues affecting diverse families, including newcomers and marginalized communities. Ability to manage multiple clients and activities, prioritize tasks, and maintain professional boundaries in a busy community environment. CPR and first aid certification, and willingness to participate in ongoing professional development. Comfort working some flexible hours to meet client and program needs, as required. Additional languages beyond English are an asset.
