Job summary

Cascadia is a clean-tech company and leader in the application of machine learning and AI in the mining industry with clients spanning five continents and including some of the largest mining companies in the world. We deliver an IIoT platform that measures and reports high-accuracy fuel consumption in a mining haulage environment and delivers AI-driven insights to drive efficiencies in operations. Cascadia is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada with employees based in several countries around the world. As a Software Developer on the team, you will design and build robust back-end services using C#/.NET and/or Node.js, work extensively with SQL and PostgreSQL databases, and contribute to modern front-end applications. You will also have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge agentic AI systems. We strongly encourage independent thinking, problem solving, innovation, and knowledge sharing. Remote — International Candidates Welcome This is a fully remote position with Cascadia Scientific. We are open to candidates in select international markets who can work effectively with our North American team and have excellent English communication skills. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Design, develop, and maintain performance back-end services and APIs using C#/.NET Core and/or Node.js, with Python as a supplementary language where appropriate. Architect and optimize relational database schemas for both OLTP (transactional) and OLAP (analytical/reporting) workloads in SQL Server and PostgreSQL. Write and tune complex SQL including stored procedures, views, CTEs, and window functions; analyze execution plans and implement indexing strategies to resolve performance bottlenecks. Design and manage database migration strategies (EF Core Migrations, Flyway, or Liquibase) supporting zero-downtime deployments and version-controlled schema management. Implement robust data access patterns—repositories, ORMs (Entity Framework, Prisma, Sequelize), and raw SQL where performance demands it—with proper connection pooling and transaction management. Monitor database health and performance using observability tools (pg_stat_statements, Query Store, EXPLAIN ANALYZE) and proactively address degradation. Build and integrate agentic AI workflows—designing autonomous agent architectures, orchestrating LLM-based pipelines, and implementing tool-use patterns for intelligent automation. Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and uphold engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, and infrastructure-as-code. Troubleshoot and debug complex distributed systems, perform root cause analysis, and implement resilient solutions to ensure reliability and performance. Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly across different functions, teams, and programs. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience. 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong emphasis on back-end development and database design. Proficiency in C#/.NET Core and/or Node.js (Express, Fastify, or similar) for building production services and APIs. Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL including: complex query authoring (CTEs, window functions, recursive queries), stored procedures, indexing strategies, transaction isolation levels, and query performance tuning via execution plan analysis. Experience with database migration tooling (EF Core Migrations, Flyway, Liquibase) and version-controlled schema management practices. Familiarity with database backup/recovery strategies, replication, high-availability configurations, and connection pooling (PgBouncer or similar). Experience with or strong interest in agentic AI development—building autonomous agents, LLM orchestration (LangChain, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen, or similar), and tool-use patterns would be appreciated. Excellent communication skills in English (both written and spoken). Strong desire to learn emerging technologies and adapt to evolving toolchains. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Python for scripting, data processing, or back-end microservices Cloud platforms (AWS preferred) including serverless and container orchestration Experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI) and agentic frameworks (LangChain, Semantic Kernel, CrewAI, AutoGen) PostgreSQL-specific features: JSONB, table partitioning, full-text search, and extensions (PostGIS, pgvector for vector similarity search) Data warehousing concepts, ETL/ELT pipelines, or tools like dbt for analytics engineering DevOps practices: Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD pipelines Database administration experience—monitoring, capacity planning, security hardening, and disaster recovery
