Role Description The Deputy Fire Chief – Training / Volunteers Management is a full-time, on-site position located in Bathurst, NB, responsible for leading training programs and overseeing volunteer firefighters within the fire department. This role plans, develops, and delivers operational, safety, and emergency response training, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and regulations. The position manages volunteer recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and performance support, fostering engagement and retention and encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. The Deputy Fire Chief collaborates with the Fire Chief and other leaders on incident preparedness, operational procedures, and community risk reduction initiatives. Daily responsibilities include coordinating training exercises, updating training records, mentoring personnel, participating in emergency response activities as required, and supporting communication between full-time and volunteer team members. Qualifications Demonstrated experience in fire service operations, including incident command, emergency response, and application of fire codes and safety standards. Proven ability to design, deliver, and evaluate training programs, including the use of modern instructional methods, drills, and scenario-based exercises. Experience managing, coordinating, or leading volunteer teams, with strong skills in mentorship, coaching, and performance feedback. Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities, particularly under pressure and in rapidly changing situations. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, community partners, and other agencies. Solid organizational and administrative capabilities, including record keeping, scheduling, and document preparation related to training and volunteer management. Relevant fire service certifications (e.g., NFPA standards, Fire Officer, Fire Instructor) and completion of recognized firefighting and emergency management training. Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, risk assessment practices, and community fire prevention and education principles. Comfort with technology used for training delivery, incident documentation, and communication within the department. Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet physical requirements associated with firefighting and emergency response.
