Are you a designated accounting professional with a passion for delivering complex financial analytics and strategic advice? The City of Edmonton’s Business Financial Analytics section is looking for a BFA Accountant to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will play a critical role in supporting client operations through financial planning, forecasting, and budget development. Your expertise will directly inform meaningful recommendations, ensuring our business areas have the financial insights they need to succeed. Provide strategic financial analytics, consultative advice, and decision support to client business areas (including Parks and Roads Services) to facilitate strong financial governance and stewardship over operating budgets Facilitate forecast and budget preparation across client business areas, including entering data into the Capital Operating Budget System, validating adjustment requirements, and evaluating alternative funding sources Partner with cross-functional teams, Senior Accountants, and the Finance Manager to develop ad-hoc reports, conduct historical budget and actual variance analyses, and build financial data for Council and Committee reports Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and operating performance reports, balance sheet reconciliations, non-consolidated working papers, and business area packages Execute month-end cutoff requirements, record transactions, process SAP adjustments, and complete monthly GST reporting in compliance with corporate accounting policies and procedures Manage grant compliance by monitoring funding source eligibility and preparing comprehensive quarterly and annual grant reports for provincial and federal funding partners Continuously improve accounting processes and procedures to meet client needs alongside organizational and technology changes Perform additional related duties as required Minimum degree from a recognized post-secondary institute in Accounting, Business, Commerce, and/or Management Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, or an internationally recognized equivalent, is required Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible related accounting experience performing financial analytics Experience working within a public sector environment is highly preferred Assets: Experience working with operating financial planning and budgeting Skills required for success: Thorough understanding of general accounting activities including budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis Significant knowledge and experience with Excel, SAP, and major financial and analytical software systems High level of analytical and conceptual skills to identify and resolve complex financial problems Thorough knowledge of corporate and departmental policies, procedures, GAAP, and Public Sector Accounting Board standards Strong problem-solving skills and effective communication abilities to resolve operational and business issues Proven ability to bridge the gap between finance and operational teams, translating complex financial data into plain, actionable insights for colleagues without accounting backgrounds Ability to effectively communicate and maintain working relationships with all levels of management, non-management personnel, and internal collaborators Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (https://bit.ly/4brRrXm) Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion Work Environment: The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
