Main Purpose and FunctionThe Transportation Design Engineer leads active transportation, street and public realm designs within the City. Furthermore, the position is responsible for supporting the development of policy and plans for transportation improvements needed within community/neighbourhood plans. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Develops conceptual street and public realm designs in collaboration with other engineers, design professionals and engineering assistants Develops and/or contributes to development of policy and guidelines relating to transportation design Oversees the work of engineering assistants involved in detailed geometric, sign and pavement marking design Coordinates preparation of and/or develops design deliverables such as memos, approved geometrics, sign/paint plans, and data analysis including reports Liaises with internal and external branches and agencies (e.g., emergency services, Park Board) on design deliverables Oversees and participates in data collection and analysis Oversees and participates in the public consultation process Investigates site conditions in the field to assist in conceptual design work and to observe completed works Supports procurement for and oversees consultants as needed (e.g., developing scope of work, reviewing proposals and selecting consultants, overseeing and approving consultant work, etc.) Ensures adherence to appropriate project management, quality management, and project/design documentation practices Other duties/responsibilities as assigned QualificationsEducation and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a professional engineer designation and a minimum of three years’ related experience in transportation, walking, or cycling planning and design, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Sound knowledge of engineering practices, design principles and theories related to transportation and public spaces Knowledge of project management methodologies, practices, processes and policies Familiarity with current Canadian and international design guidelines pertinent to active transportation Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and engage staff Strong analytical skills and a demonstrated ability to anticipate and manage multiple interacting and technically complex issues Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to effectively and efficiently prioritize actions in response to numerous and diverse demands Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills Strong conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation skills Ability to exercise diplomacy and tact Ability to consider a range of interests, including those of local residents, community groups, and businesses Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment with little supervision Ability to prioritize and organize work, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines Ability to develop and maintain positive, productive relationships at all levels in the organization and external stakeholders Proficient in the use of software applications such as MS Office and AutoCAD Business Unit/Department: Engineering Services Affiliation: Exempt Employment Type: Regular Full Time Position Start Date: November, 2026 (Regular Full Time and Temporary Full Time) Position End Date: August, 2028 (Temporary Full Time) Salary Information (EIT): Pay Grade RNG-060: $80,008 to $100,006 per annum Salary Information (P.Eng): Pay Grade RNG-080: $102,960 to $128,691 per annum Number of Positions: 2 (1 Regular Full Time and 1 Temporary Full Time) Application Close: October 13, 2026 At the City of Vancouver, we are committed to recruiting a diverse workforce that represents the community we so proudly serve.
