Math Consultant

Position Summary Full-Time Support Staff, replacement position (First consideration for support staff and academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective collective agreements) The Math Consultant supports Trades & Apprenticeship students with math and numeracy course content to strengthen their knowledge and improve confidence through direct service delivery, development of self-help resources, and anticipating mathematical barriers. As an integral member of the Library & Learning Services and Math Consultant team, the incumbent works collaboratively with Student Success colleagues and Trades & Apprenticeship Program teams to develop and organize proactive and responsive math support delivery models. Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with four days on-site at the Cambridge Skilled Trades Campus, located at 25 Reuter Drive, Cambridge, and one day remote. Responsibilities Service delivery Providing math and numeracy support to Trades & Apprenticeship students across all campuses, with a primary focus at the Conestoga Skilled Trades Campus Optimizing math service access for students that is informed by targeted course learning objectives, and program scheduling Applying knowledge of adult learning principles and math pedagogy to improve the math skills and confidence of students through individual and group appointments and/or drop-ins (in person and/or virtually) Developing and facilitating math and numeracy workshops to provide enhanced service supports (i.e., review sessions) Assisting with the proposing, planning, and delivering targeted programming to support numeracy skills for Trades & Apprenticeship students Liaising with Trades & Apprenticeship faculty and program teams, Student Success staff and other college personnel, as required. Making informed referrals to other service areas Research and development Staying current in the fields of math and numeracy education, adult education, skilled trades and technology Working proactively, and in partnership with management and the Math Consultant team, to research and respond to changing student demographics, institutional trends and program and curriculum design Researching, developing, and maintaining appropriate resources and self-directed materials for students Providing support to management in the hiring, training, and development of student tutors in math-specific areas (i.e., assessment of content knowledge in relevant student worker interviews) Administration Supporting the operations and management teams in the development and maintenance of Math Consultant training documentation and best practices Collecting and maintaining statistics relevant to Ministry reporting and the requirements of the College in coordination with the Operations and Management teams Tracking and monitoring trends and patterns in service delivery, with a focus on Trades & Apprenticeship programs Working with the operations, management, and academic program teams to evaluate the effectiveness of service delivery and identify key areas for improvement in service delivery Participating in relevant meetings and actively contributing to the progression and operations of the larger Student Success team, service area team, and college committees as assigned Qualifications A four-year bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Education, Physics, Arts, Science or a related field is required Specific education related to skilled trades, Certificate of Apprenticeship, Trade Certificate, or being a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Trades is an asset A minimum of two years of experience working in an educational environment, supporting students with numeracy skills and providing training or educational development is required Experience working with adult learners is considered an asset Knowledge and demonstrated application of skilled trades numeracy content (i.e. calculations based on circuits, building codes, electrical codes; trade-specific formulas, charts or tables; isometric and orthographic drawings) Demonstrated listening and coaching skills with the ability to adapt service delivery to the preferences and needs of the student(s) Excellent interpersonal, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills Strong ability to work collaboratively within the Math Consultant, Student Success, and academic teams Self-directed, innovative, and demonstrates initiative Displays strong organizational ability with close attention to detail Experience using learning technology in the delivery of math supports Knowledge and experience of computer systems (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite) and educational technologies (i.e. D2L) Strong active learning facilitation skills

The Math Consultant provides numeracy support and direct service delivery to Trades & Apprenticeship students to improve their mathematical confidence and knowledge. This includes developing self-help resources, facilitating workshops, and collaborating with academic teams to optimize support models.

A bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, Physics, Arts, Science, or a related field is required, along with at least two years of experience in an educational environment. Knowledge of skilled trades numeracy content and experience with adult learners are highly valued assets.
