Location: Remote (home office-based) with on-site visits as required. You must reside in the Edmonton (or surrounding) area to be considered a candidate. Engagement Type: Independent Contractor – Per-File / Per-Assignment Basis Compensation: Competitive Commission Who We Are HGM Adjusters is an independent adjusting firm working out of Lethbridge, Edmonton, and Medicine Hat, with files across Alberta and Western Canada. We handle claims across personal and commercial auto, property, farm, cargo, equipment, liability, and bodily injury – from routine files to large, complex losses. As a family-founded and owner-operated business, we strive to handle every file under the same standards: clear communication, technical accuracy, and each party treated like people, not claim numbers. About the Role We are seeking a qualified individual to handle automobile claims in the areas we service. The ideal candidate is a licensed, experienced adjuster who can manage an independent caseload from a home office, conduct thorough investigations – including on-site visits and in-person statements when required – and deliver clear, well-supported reports within tight timelines. Key Responsibilities Investigate and evaluate automobile claims – collision, comprehensive, liability, and total loss – through on-site inspections and virtual/desk review Determine total loss valuations and settlement recommendations in accordance with Alberta regulations Set and maintain accurate loss and expense reserves through the life of the file, revising as new information comes in Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely claim reports, estimates, and photo documentation Handle first- and third-party claims by phone, email, and video – assessing coverage, determining liability, and keeping policyholders, brokers, repair facilities, and insurers informed throughout Apply the Alberta Standard Automobile Policy and Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD) provisions in coverage and liability decisions Adjust files under both the current tort-based system and the Care-First model through the changeover, applying the correct regime by date of loss Negotiate and settle claims within assigned authority levels Manage an independent caseload remotely to our quality standards and deadlines, keeping a current diary and documenting all activity in our software Maintain strict confidentiality of claimant, policyholder, and insurer information, and handle all personal and claims data in accordance with applicable privacy legislation and our file-handling requirements Qualifications Required Active Alberta Insurance Council adjuster license in good standing (or eligibility & willingness to obtain one) Minimum 5 years of automobile claims adjusting experience Proficiency with translatable claim reporting software and tools, and Microsoft Office Working knowledge of Alberta automobile insurance regulations and DCPD provisions Strong analytical and negotiation skills Reliable high-speed internet and a quiet home office setup Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel within the Edmonton and surrounding area for on-site visits Professional and self-directed, with strong written and verbal communication and the discipline to manage competing deadlines remotely Actively engaged in learning about Alberta’s Care-First system ahead of the January 1, 2027 changeover Pass the Government of Alberta Care-First manager training (The Alberta Government has stated that this course must be completed by January 1, 2027) Preferred Experience with complex and total-loss claims CIP, FCIP, or equivalent professional designation What We Offer Competitive commission structure Flexible, independent contractor arrangement Ongoing assignments based on performance and availability Easy-to-use claims management system Employee benefits How to Apply Interested candidates should submit a resume and two references to: Matt Carbert HGM Adjusters Ltd.
