Title: Life Insurance Underwriter Duration: Fulltime, permanent Location: Waterloo, ON (REMOTE) Salary range: $85 000 - $135 000 per year + bonus/benefits Vacancy Status: This posting is for currently vacant roles, and the successful candidate will be hired into an existing open position Job Description: Insight Global is partnering with a rapidly growing insurance client seeking experienced Individual Life Underwriters across multiple levels and areas of specialization. Opportunities exist across traditional life and critical illness underwriting, large case and high-net-worth underwriting, advanced markets, and technical underwriting leadership. Depending on experience and specialization, successful candidates may be responsible for independently evaluating and underwriting life insurance and critical illness applications, assessing medical and financial risk, supporting complex case management, and partnering with advisors, MGAs, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders to deliver thoughtful underwriting decisions and exceptional client service. Unlike highly structured or checklist-driven environments, underwriters are trusted to apply their judgment, exercise authority, and contribute to sophisticated risk assessment strategies. Candidates may have backgrounds ranging from traditional life underwriting to advanced financial underwriting, large case business, high-net-worth markets, reinsurance, or technical underwriting consulting. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with solid underwriting fundamentals, sound judgment, and a desire to contribute within a collaborative and evolving underwriting organization. Experience with advanced markets, large case underwriting, significant signing authority, or technical mentorship is considered an asset, but candidates are not expected to possess expertise across all underwriting specialties. Underwriters are encouraged to explore multiple career paths based on their interests, strengths, and professional goals, including: Large Case & High-Net-Worth Underwriting Advanced Markets & Specialized Financial Underwriting Risk Management & Reinsurance AI & Predictive Underwriting through a newly established innovation-focused team Non-Production Risk & Strategic Underwriting Functions Underwriting Governance, Quality Assurance & Risk Management Technical Underwriting Leadership & Subject Matter Expert Roles Mentorship, Coaching & Future Leadership Opportunities Required Skills & Experience 2+ years of underwriting experience in individual life insurance (traditional life insurance) Experience underwriting life insurance and/or critical illness products Strong understanding of medical and financial risk assessment Experience evaluating complex, higher-value, or highly rated cases Demonstrated underwriting authority and confidence making independent underwriting decisions (Generally $1.5M+ signing authority) Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills Ability to assess risk, validate information, and challenge assumptions when necessary Ability to collaborate effectively with advisors, MGAs, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders in a fast-paced environment Nice to Have Experience Successful candidates may bring expertise in one or more of the following areas: Large case and high-net-worth underwriting Advanced markets underwriting Critical illness underwriting Significant life insurance signing authority Financial underwriting involving corporations, trusts, estates, succession planning, financing, premium financing, or intergenerational wealth transfer Retention strategies including jumbo limits, stacking authority etc Reinsurance underwriting experience Mentoring, coaching, or technical leadership experience Experience working with MGAs, advanced markets, or national account distribution channels Industry designations such as FALU, FLMI, or similar Bilingualism (English/French) or additional languages such as Mandarin or Cantonese Artificial intelligence tools are used to assist with screening and assessing applicants for this position.
