Job summary

itec has partnered with a customer that designs and builds automated equipment and turnkey systems for demanding industries, including automotive, aerospace, nuclear, life sciences, food, and pharmaceuticals. They deliver robust, compliant, and manufacturable solutions that meet strict safety, quality and regulatory requirements. The Intermediate Mechanical Designer will lead mechanical design and detailed engineering for automation systems, developing machine structures, tooling, fixtures and EOAT that are reliable, serviceable and manufacturable. You will translate concepts into detailed CAD models and drawing packages, support prototyping and commissioning, and mentor junior designers while ensuring designs meet industry specific standards and customer requirements. Key Responsibilities Lead mechanical design for automation projects: concept design, detailed 3D modeling, assemblies, and 2D fabrication drawings. Produce complete design packages for manufacture: BOMs, fabrication drawings, weldment drawings, GD&T, material specifications and assembly instructions. Design machine frames, guards, fixtures, end of arm tooling, conveyors, material handling and fixturing to support automation requirements. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements relevant to target sectors (safety standards, sanitary design for food/pharma, nuclear/defense requirements where applicable). Collaborate closely with controls, electrical, software and systems engineers to define interfaces, cable routing, mounting points, and installation requirements. Perform tolerance analysis, interference checks, motion studies and basic static/structural assessments to validate designs. Support prototyping, FAT/SAT activities and on site commissioning; troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement corrective design changes. Apply DFM/DFMA principles to optimize cost, assembly time and serviceability; work with vendors to source components and validate manufacturability. Create and maintain design standards, templates, libraries and CAD best practices; enforce version control in PDM/PLM systems. Mentor and review the work of junior designers; lead design reviews and present design decisions to internal stakeholders and customers. Contribute to project estimation, scope definition and technical proposals as required. Qualifications & Experience Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or related discipline. 3–5+ years of mechanical design experience in OEM automation, machine building or heavy industrial environments. Experience supporting multiple regulated industries (automotive, aerospace, food/pharma, nuclear) is a strong asset. Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred; Creo/Inventor acceptable) with extensive experience creating complex assemblies and detailed fabrication drawings. Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerancing, weldment design and common manufacturing processes (welding, machining, sheet metal, forging, casting). Experience designing machine guarding, safety components, and knowledge of machine safety standards (ISO 12100, ISO 13849, etc.). Familiarity with material selection, surface finishes and sanitary design principles for food/pharma applications. Ability to perform basic structural checks, load calculations and motion/kinematic studies; familiarity with FEA tools is a plus. Experience with PDM/PLM systems, BOM management and engineering change processes. Proven ability to lead design reviews, manage deliverables and meet project timelines under pressure. Excellent communication skills and ability to liaise with customers, suppliers and cross functional teams. Willingness to travel for factory acceptance tests and onsite commissioning as required. Technical Skills & Tools SolidWorks (advanced) 3D modeling, assemblies, drawings, welded assemblies GD&T application and tolerance stack up analysis CAD/PDM best practices (Vault, PDM Professional, or similar) Familiarity with motion simulation tools and basic FEA (desirable) Microsoft Office, PLM/Jira/Confluence for documentation and collaboration Location: Cambridge, ON Pay Range: $30hr - $45hr If you are interested in learning more about the Intermediate Mechanical Designer job opportunity, please submit your updated resume to [email protected] We are recruitment industry leaders committed to quality service, integrity, respect and equal opportunity.
