As a Backend-Focused Full-Stack Software Engineer within J-Squared’s FALC-AI division, you will be responsible for designing, building, testing, and maintaining the backend services and platform capabilities that power our edge AI software products. This role is primarily backend-focused, with opportunities to contribute across the full stack where needed. You will work on the services, APIs, databases, data flows, integrations, and deployment infrastructure that connect edge devices, AI inference outputs, customer dashboards, alerts, reporting tools, and cloud-connected product workflows. You will work closely with software developers, AI/ML engineers, edge application developers, QA, product, hardware, and customer-facing teams to build reliable software that turns real-world device and AI data into usable product capabilities. Specifically, you will be responsible for: Backend application and service development Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services that support FALC-AI software products and customer-facing applications. Build APIs, application services, data processing workflows, and integration layers that connect edge devices, AI outputs, dashboards, alerts, users, and administrative tools. Develop backend logic for device registration, user management, authentication, authorization, notifications, configuration management, event processing, and product workflows. Build software that is modular, maintainable, secure, testable, and scalable as the product grows across customers, locations, devices, and deployment types. Implement robust error handling, logging, validation, retry logic, background jobs, and operational safeguards for production systems. Refactor and improve existing backend code to reduce technical debt, improve reliability, and support future product features. Contribute to backend architecture decisions, service boundaries, data ownership, API design, and integration patterns. Data, event, and edge-to-cloud workflows Design and implement backend workflows that receive, process, store, and expose data from edge devices and AI-enabled applications. Work with structured outputs from AI pipelines, including detections, classifications, alerts, metadata, device health data, logs, video/image references, and operational events. Build event-driven or asynchronous processing workflows for notifications, alert handling, reporting, analytics, and downstream system integrations. Develop reliable data models and database schemas that support operational use cases, customer dashboards, auditability, reporting, and long-term maintainability. Support edge-to-cloud communication patterns where devices may have limited bandwidth, intermittent connectivity, delayed synchronization, or variable data volume. Implement APIs and backend services that make AI-generated insights accessible to frontend applications, customer workflows, and internal tools. Monitor and improve backend performance, including query efficiency, API response time, throughput, data processing latency, and infrastructure resource usage. Full-stack product support Collaborate with frontend developers to define clean API contracts, data models, user flows, dashboard requirements, and integration expectations. Contribute to frontend or full-stack development where required, particularly for administrative tools, dashboards, internal utilities, customer workflows, or API-driven user interfaces. Ensure backend implementation supports usability needs such as filtering, search, pagination, role-based access, reporting, alerts, configuration screens, and operational views. Help troubleshoot issues across the frontend, backend, database, cloud services, and edge-device interfaces. Participate in feature definition and technical design discussions to ensure product requirements are feasible, scalable, and maintainable. Support demos, pilots, customer trials, and production deployments by helping prepare backend services, test data, integrations, and troubleshooting tools. For more senior candidates, guide implementation patterns that allow the product to scale without creating brittle frontend/backend coupling. Cloud, DevOps, and production operations Build and maintain backend services that can be deployed reliably using repeatable, version-controlled deployment processes. Work with containerized applications, CI/CD pipelines, cloud services, environment configuration, secrets management, logging, and monitoring tools. Support release readiness by validating backend functionality, deployment steps, migration scripts, configuration changes, and rollback considerations. Create and maintain operational tooling, scripts, health checks, dashboards, and diagnostics that help the team understand system behaviour in development, test, pilot, and production environments. Participate in troubleshooting production or pilot issues involving APIs, databases, cloud services, device communication, permissions, networking, or data inconsistencies. Contribute to security, reliability, and maintainability practices for connected software systems, including authentication, authorization, data protection, audit trails, and secure service communication. Identify recurring operational issues and propose improvements to make the platform easier to deploy, support, monitor, and scale. Software quality, testing, and collaboration Write unit tests, integration tests, API tests, validation scripts, and automated checks for backend components. Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback on correctness, maintainability, performance, testing, and security. Document backend components, APIs, architecture decisions, deployment steps, data models, configuration requirements, and troubleshooting procedures. Break down technical work into clear tasks, estimate effort, identify dependencies, and communicate progress or blockers early. Work effectively with software, AI/ML, edge systems, QA, product, support, and customer-facing teams to clarify requirements and deliver working software. Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, design reviews, retrospectives, release planning, and technical decision-making. For more senior candidates, mentor junior developers, lead small feature streams, establish reusable backend patterns, and help raise the quality of the engineering team’s software practices. Enough About Us, Let’s Talk About You For a candidate to be successful in this role, the key qualifications include: A bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical software development experience. Approximately 5–8+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated ownership of complex backend services, platform components, or product features. Strong hands-on backend development experience using one or more production languages such as TypeScript / JavaScript, Python, C#, C++, Java, Go, or similar. Experience building and maintaining backend services, REST APIs, service layers, data processing workflows, integrations, or cloud-connected software applications. Experience designing and working with relational or document databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, DynamoDB, or similar. Strong understanding of backend software design fundamentals, including service boundaries, data modelling, API design, error handling, logging, validation, configuration, and maintainability. Experience with authentication, authorization, user roles, secure API design, session/token handling, and basic application security practices. Experience building software that interacts with external systems, devices, APIs, message queues, cloud services, or event-driven workflows. Experience writing and maintaining tests for backend software, including unit tests, integration tests, API tests, or automated validation scripts. Comfortable debugging backend issues using logs, traces, database queries, API tools, cloud logs, profilers, and structured troubleshooting methods. Familiarity with cloud-hosted or containerized application environments, including Docker. Experience with CI/CD pipelines, environment configuration, and deployment workflows. Ability to communicate technical decisions, risks, blockers, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical team members. Comfortable working in a product development environment where requirements evolve through prototypes, pilots, customer feedback, and production deployments. Additionally, we are looking for someone who has: Experience developing backend systems for AI, computer vision, IoT, edge computing, industrial technology, or hardware-enabled software products. Experience working with data or events generated by devices, sensors, cameras, AI models, or distributed field deployments. Experience with edge-to-cloud architectures, including device onboarding, telemetry, remote configuration, alerts, synchronization, or intermittent connectivity. Experience with message queues, background workers, asynchronous processing, or event-driven workflows. Experience with cloud services, containerized deployments, CI/CD, monitoring, logging, and release management.
