Camp Junior Counselor (Volunteer) Position Summary The Camp Junior Counselor is a volunteer support role that assists Senior Counselors and Camp Leadership in delivering Camp Shalom programming for children ages 5–9. Junior Counselors work under the direct supervision of Senior Counselors and Camp Leadership and help create a safe, welcoming, and fun environment that reflects Jewish values and the spirit of the Jewish Community Centre. This position is designed as a learning and leadership-development opportunity for youth volunteers. This is a volunteer position. Dates September 25, 2026 - June 1, 2027 Reports to: Camp Shalom Director and Camp Assistant Director KEY RESPONSIBILITIES SUPPORTING CAMP PROGRAMS * Assist Senior Counselors with activities and daily routines helping to create a positive and inviting environment for campers. * Help prepare materials, set up activities, and tidy activity spaces. * Actively participate in morning greetings, mifkad (morning circle), activities, field trips, camping trips, and rad hayom (end-of-day circle) pick up and staff meetings. * Support group transitions (moving between activities, washroom breaks, snack times, etc.). * Follow direction from Senior Counselors and Camp Leadership at all times. * Attend mandatory staff training. SUPPORTING CHILDREN (UNDER SUPERVISION) * Help create a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for campers. * Support children during activities by encouraging participation and positive behaviour. * Alert a Senior Counselor or Camp Supervisor if a camper needs help, support, or attention. * Assist with simple supervision tasks only as directed by a Senior Counselor. Junior Counselors do not provide primary supervision of campers and do not manage behaviour, medical needs, or safety situations independently. Supporting the Camp Team * Be flexible and assist in different areas of camp as needed. * Work cooperatively with other Junior Counselors and Senior Counselors. * Maintain a positive and professional attitude as a role model for campers. END-OF-PROGRAM SUPPORT * Assist with clean-up of activity areas and equipment. * Help organize and return supplies to storage under staff direction. IMPORTANT SCOPE OF THE ROLE * Junior Counselors always work under the oversight of Senior Counselors and Camp Leadership. * Junior Counselors are not responsible for parent or family communication. * Any questions, concerns, or incidents must be immediately referred to a Senior Counselor or Camp Leadership. QUALIFICATIONS * Interest in working with children ages 5–9. * Willingness to learn and take direction in a structured camp environment. * Friendly, reliable, and respectful attitude. * Ability to work as part of a team. * Commitment to creating a safe and inclusive camp environment. * Previous camp or youth leadership experience is an asset, but not required.
