Sky Eye Measurement is seeking an Intermediate Electrical & Instrumentation Designer to produce electrical and instrumentation deliverables for industrial, energy and facility projects. This is a hands-on production design role suited to a designer with roughly five to ten years of combined electrical and instrumentation design experience who can work independently on defined scopes of work, mentor junior staff, and take a package from concept through issued-for-construction. Purpose The purpose of an Electrical & Instrumentation Designer at Sky Eye is to create detailed, easy to understand electrical drawings to support our team in developing an effective and innovative product for our clients. Working under the direction of a Lead Designer or Project Engineer, the Electrical & Instrumentation Designer develops single line diagrams, area classification drawings, cable schedules, loop drawings, panel layouts and installation details from P&IDs, equipment data and client specifications. Responsibilities Electrical Design Develop single line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics and elementary control diagrams for power distribution systems. Prepare electrical site plans, equipment layouts, cable tray and conduit routing, lighting layouts and grounding drawings. Produce hazardous area classification drawings in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and API RP 500/505. Develop motor control centre and switchgear layouts, panel arrangements and wiring diagrams. Prepare cable schedules, cable block diagrams, and perform cable sizing, voltage drop and conduit fill calculations. Design lighting and receptacle systems, including lighting level calculations for indoor and outdoor areas. Develop grounding and lightning protection layouts, heat trace layouts, and electrical installation details. Instrumentation Design Produce loop drawings, wiring diagrams, junction box termination details and marshalling cabinet layouts. Prepare instrument location plans, hook-up drawings and installation details for process, pneumatic and electrical connections. Develop control panel and PLC/DCS cabinet layouts, including terminal strip and I/O card assignments. Support instrument specification and selection in coordination with process and controls engineering. Coordination & Interdisciplinary Work Coordinate design with process, mechanical, piping, structural and civil disciplines to resolve interferences and interface issues. Review piping and equipment models to confirm instrument locations, access and cable routing feasibility. Quality, Standards & Documentation Apply the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), CSA and ULC standards, IEEE and ISA standards, and applicable provincial regulations. Apply ISA 5.1 instrumentation symbology and tagging conventions consistently across project deliverables. Check and self-check drawings for completeness, accuracy and adherence to project specifications prior to issue. Check the work of junior designers and drafters, providing redlines, direction and technical mentorship. Maintain drawing registers, revision control and squad-check records in accordance with company and client document control procedures. Produce as-built markups and update deliverables to reflect final installed conditions. Project Support Prepare material take-offs and bulk quantity estimates for cable, tray, conduit, fittings and instrumentation. Contribute to continuous improvement of company drafting standards, templates, symbol libraries and design procedures. Qualifications & Experience Diploma or certificate in Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Engineering Design & Drafting Technology or a related discipline. Five to ten years of progressive electrical and instrumentation design experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, industrial, mining, power or a related heavy-industrial sector. Demonstrated ability to take an E&I package from P&ID through issued-for-construction with limited supervision. Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, hazardous area classification, and electrical equipment ratings and enclosure types. Solid understanding of field instrumentation, transmitters, control valves, analyzers and their wiring and installation requirements. Familiarity with PLC and DCS architectures, 4-20 mA and HART signals, intrinsic safety barriers and fieldbus fundamentals. Software & Technical Skills Autodesk, AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical — schematics, panel layouts, wire numbering, report generation and symbol library management. Proficiency producing 2D deliverables to client CAD standards, layer conventions and title block requirements. Navisworks or equivalent for model review and coordination is an asset. Competency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for instrument indexes, cable schedules and I/O lists. Working Conditions Hybrid work environment, design work at a Sky Eye computer workstation. Shop access requires the use of personal protective equipment supplied by Sky Eye Occasional overtime may be required to meet project milestones. Requirements
Candidates must have a diploma or certificate in Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering Technology and 5 to 10 years of experience in heavy-industrial sectors. Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical and a strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code are required.
